Chapter 9 - The Blood Oath and the Confession by Firelight

The cold rain lashed against the highway asphalt, but inside Highland Manor, the grand stone fireplace in the third-floor master library crackled with warm, amber flames.

The battle on Lake Shore Drive had ended with absolute, decisive brutality. When Daniel stepped out into that rain, his tactical precision was terrifying. He had neutralized Marcus’s remaining three mercenaries in under twenty seconds with lethal, surgical shots through the storm.

Marcus, terrified and out of ammunition, had abandoned his weapon, stolen a civilian vehicle idling near the overpass, and fled into the night. Luca’s tactical units were currently hunting him across the tri-state area.

We had returned to the estate at 3:00 AM.

Michael had run up from the secure bunker, throwing his arms around me in a tearful, overwhelming embrace, thanking Daniel repeatedly. Daniel had simply gripped Michael’s shoulder with profound respect, officially welcoming him into the family’s inner cybersecurity circle.

Now, the estate was quiet. Leo was sleeping peacefully in his nursery, completely unaware of the storm that had raged across the city.

I sat on the plush leather sofa in front of the roaring library fireplace, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket. My bruised shoulder was bandaged, and my hair hung in damp waves over my shoulders.

The heavy oak door opened, and Daniel walked in carrying a silver first-aid tray and a decanter of amber scotch. He had showered; his dark hair was damp, and he wore clean black lounge pants and a soft charcoal long-sleeve shirt.

He set the tray on the low mahogany coffee table and knelt on the Persian rug in front of me.

"Let me look at that shoulder," he said softly.

"I’m a nurse, Daniel. I can bandage myself," I whispered with a tired smile.

"Tonight, I take care of you," he replied, his voice brooking no argument.

Gently, with hands that had ended three lives two hours ago and yet touched me as if I were made of spun glass, Daniel untied the wrap around my shoulder. He inspected the dark purplish bruise along my collarbone, his jaw tightening slightly with guilt.

"I shouldn't have brought you to that gala," Daniel murmured, his fingers gently applying a soothing herbal arnica balm over my skin. "I put you in the line of fire."

"You didn't force me to go, Daniel. I chose to stand by you," I said, reaching up with my good arm and resting my hand against his cheek, feeling the rough stubble beneath my palm. "And you kept your promise. You protected Michael. You protected me. You saved your son."

Daniel closed his eyes for a long moment, leaning into the warmth of my palm. The crushing weight of grief, betrayal, and war that he had carried for weeks seemed to melt away under my touch.

He opened his eyes, staring into mine with an emotional intensity that took my breath away.

"When Camille was killed, I thought my life was over," Daniel confessed, his voice thick with raw emotion. "I thought my only purpose left on this earth was to keep Leo alive and burn down everything that hurt him. I was living in darkness, Rachel. Pure, cold, merciless darkness."

He reached out, his large hand gently cupping the back of my neck, his thumb caressing my cheek.

"Then you walked into that hospital room. You didn't care about my guns, my name, or my power. You cared about my son. You brought warmth back into his chest, and without even trying... you brought my dead heart back to life."

Tears welled in my eyes, sparkling in the firelight. "Daniel..."

"I love you, Rachel," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with an honesty he had never shown another living soul. "I love your courage, your fierce heart, your gentle hands. I want you to be the mother of my son. I want you to be my wife. I want to spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to be afraid of anything ever again."

"I love you too, Daniel," I breathed, the words flowing naturally from the depths of my soul. "From the moment you held Leo against your chest in that rocking chair, I knew who you really were."

Daniel leaned in, his lips finding mine in the golden glow of the fireplace.

The kiss was slow, deep, and intoxicating—a collision of relief, passion, and an unbreakable bond forged in blood and fire. His arms wrapped around me, pulling me gently against his powerful chest, holding me as if I were the most precious treasure in the world.

When we finally parted, breathless, Daniel rested his forehead against mine.

"Tomorrow, we finish Marcus," Daniel promised softly. "And then, my love... we build a real family."
