Chapter 6 - A Brother’s Desperate Call from the Shadows

Daniel answered the phone instantly, switching it to the encrypted speakerphone while keeping his voice low so as not to disturb Leo.

"Michael?" Daniel said.

"Rachel? Is Rachel there?" My brother’s voice sounded frantic, ragged with exhaustion, and distorted by background street noise and rain.

"Michael! I’m here!" I cried, leaning toward the phone. "Are you okay? Where are you?"

"Rachel, oh God, thank God you’re alive," Michael gasped, breathing heavily. "I’ve been watching the news, watching the hospital feeds. When you vanished from St. Jude’s, I thought Russo’s men took you to kill you—"

"Michael, listen to me," I interrupted firmly. "I am safe. I am at Daniel Russo’s estate in Highland Park. I am caring for his baby. Daniel knows everything. He knows you didn't steal the money for yourself. He knows you bought the file."

There was a stunned silence on the other end of the line. "He... he knows?"

Daniel leaned over the phone, his voice deep, authoritative, but devoid of hostility. "Michael, this is Daniel Russo. You have my solemn word on my son’s life that you are under my protection. You did what none of my own lieutenants had the guts to do. But you need to listen to me carefully. Who is tracking you?"

Michael let out a shaky, terrified breath. "It’s Marcus’s private strike team. They’re not using Russo Family frequencies—they’re using private encrypted mercenary channels funded by the Moretti syndicate out of New York."

Daniel’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. "The Morettis. Marcus sold out our northern supply routes to the Moretti family in exchange for backing his coup."

"Yes!" Michael said. "The audio file I decrypted from the dark web broker contains the full phone recording between Marcus and Vincent Moretti from the night of the hit. Marcus gave them the convoy route and specifically told them to execute Camille to break your spirit and force you to step down as head of the family."

Hearing the brutal truth spoken aloud made Daniel’s jaw lock so tightly the veins on his neck bulged against his skin.

"Where is the drive, Michael?" Daniel asked.

"I hid the physical drive inside a high-security lockbox at the South River Marine terminal, locker 402," Michael explained rapidly. "The master key and decryption passcode are in my head. But Daniel... they have the terminal surrounded. There are at least eight heavily armed men watching the perimeter. I’m pinned inside an old boiler room three blocks away. My battery is at four percent. If I move, they’ll spot me."

Daniel stood up, gently transferring the sleeping Leo into my arms.

"Stay where you are, Michael," Daniel commanded with absolute, lethal certainty. "Do not engage. Do not look out the windows. I am sending Luca with two tactical assault vans. They will breach the south alley in precisely twelve minutes. When you hear three short horn blasts, you run to the black van. Do you understand me?"

"Twelve minutes... okay. Okay. Rachel... I love you."

"I love you too, Michael. Just hold on!" I cried.

The call clicked dead.

Daniel turned around, strapping a custom shoulder holster across his broad chest and locking a sleek semi-automatic pistol into place. He pulled on a dark tactical jacket, his presence transforming in an instant from a tender father back into the apex predator of Chicago.

"I’m going with Luca," Daniel said, checking the magazine of his weapon.

"Daniel, be careful," I said, stepping toward him, Leo cradled safely against my chest. "Marcus wants you dead as much as he wants Michael."

Daniel walked up to me. He paused, looking at Leo, and then his eyes rose to mine. Slowly, deliberately, he raised his hand, his fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. His touch was warm, electric, and filled with a fierce, unspoken promise.

"Nobody harms my family, Rachel," Daniel said softly, his voice vibrating with absolute conviction. "And that includes you and your brother."

Before I could reply, he turned on his heel and swept out of the room, leaving behind the faint scent of cedarwood, rain, and imminent retribution.
