Chapter 15 - From the Shadows of Grief to a Lifetime of Sunlit Love

Eleven months later.
The grand gardens of Highland Manor were bathed in golden midsummer sunshine.
The once-dark, fortress-like estate had been completely transformed. The heavy wrought-iron security gates remained for privacy, but the dark stone facade was now covered in blooming white wisteria and climbing ivy. The grand lawn overlooking Lake Michigan was filled with laughter, colorful balloons, long banquet tables adorned with fresh wildflowers, and over a hundred guests.
Today was baby Leo’s first birthday.
Leo was no longer the fragile, two-kilogram premature infant fighting for his life in an incubator. He was a chubby, healthy, radiant one-year-old with a mop of dark curls, bright curious blue eyes, and endless energy. He was currently wobbling across the soft grass in tiny white leather sneakers, chasing a golden retriever puppy under the watchful, adoring eyes of Mrs. Gable and Michael.
"Look at him run!" Michael laughed, walking over to me with a plate of appetizers. "He’s faster than the security detail."
"He gets that stubborn energy from his father," I replied with a laugh, smoothing down the skirt of my flowing white linen sundress.
On my left ring finger, a magnificent, custom-cut emerald-cut diamond ring sparkled brilliantly in the afternoon sun. Six months ago, Daniel had taken me to the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast and asked me to be his wife in front of the entire world. Our wedding was set for the coming autumn in the historic cathedral downtown.
"Rachel," a deep, smooth voice called out behind me.
I turned around to see Daniel walking toward us across the lawn.
He wore a tailored light-gray linen suit with an open-collared white shirt, looking devastatingly handsome, relaxed, and happy. The dark circles that had once shadowed his eyes were gone, replaced by a bright, warm light that made my heart flutter every single time he looked at me.
Daniel reached out, wrapping his arm around my waist, pulling me effortlessly against his side, and pressing a sweet, lingering kiss to my temple.
"Happy first year of motherhood, my love," Daniel murmured, his gray eyes shining with adoration.
"Happy first year of fatherhood, Mr. Russo," I teased softly, resting my hand against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart beneath my palm.
Across the lawn, Dr. Miller and several of the pediatric nurses from St. Jude’s—who were now close friends and board members of the Camille & Leo Pediatric Foundation funded by Daniel—raised their champagne glasses in a cheerful toast.
Suddenly, Leo let out a joyful squeal, toddled across the lawn, and threw his little arms around Daniel’s legs.
"Dada! Mama!" Leo babbed excitedly, looking up with a wide, toothy grin.
Daniel laughed, scooping his son up into his massive arms and tossing him gently into the air, catching him securely against his chest as Leo erupted into pure, ringing giggles.
Daniel brought Leo close, and then wrapped his free arm around me, holding us both in a warm, protective embrace in the center of the sunlit lawn.
I looked at the man who had once been the most feared mafia boss in Chicago, and then looked at the healthy, laughing baby who had brought us together in the dark chill of Suite A.
The shadows of grief, fear, and betrayal were gone forever. In their place stood a family forged in courage, bound by honor, and blessed with an eternal, sunlit love.
"I love you, Rachel," Daniel whispered, looking into my eyes with everything he had in his soul. "Forever."
May you like
"Forever, Daniel," I replied, smiling as I leaned up to kiss his lips while our son giggled between us.
