Chapter 2 - The Fifty-Thousand-Dollar File and the Midnight Contract

The air inside Suite A grew so thick it felt difficult to draw breath. Leo remained asleep against my chest, his small, warm body rising and falling rhythmically, completely oblivious to the deadly conspiracy unraveling above his head.

"My brother... investigating Camille’s murder?" I whispered, my voice trembling. "Michael is a freelance cybersecurity analyst. He repairs server networks for commercial warehouses. How could he possibly be involved in this?"

Daniel tapped his phone screen, turning the display toward me. On the screen was a high-resolution surveillance still taken three nights ago outside an abandoned warehouse in the Pilsen industrial district. It showed Michael, wearing his faded navy hoodie, exchanging a military-grade encrypted flash drive with an unidentified man in a black tactical jacket. Beneath the image was a digital bank transfer slip confirming a wire transfer of fifty thousand dollars routed through a dummy shell corporation.

"Three weeks ago, before the ambush," Daniel explained, his voice low, sharp, and razor-focused, "I hired an external team of independent data security contractors to run an audit on the private communications between my captains. Your brother was part of that contracting firm. He wasn't supposed to read the data packets—only secure the firewalls. But Michael is smarter than his employers realized. He flagged an encrypted data leak coming from my family’s private server in Lake Forest."

"A leak?" I asked, my heart hammering.

"The exact GPS coordinates of Camille’s armored convoy," Daniel said, his jaw tightening so hard I heard the enamel of his teeth grind. "The route was changed twenty minutes before we left the estate. Only five people in the world knew that route. Michael saw the outgoing transmission packet. When the news hit that Camille was killed and Leo was cut from her dying body, your brother realized he was holding the digital fingerprint of the murderer."

The room seemed to spin around me. Michael wasn't a criminal. He was a terrified kid who had stumbled upon the darkest secret of the Chicago mafia and had stolen Daniel's money simply to buy the decryption keys from the black-market broker who built the malware.

"Where is he now?" I demanded, panic rising in my throat. "Daniel, where is my brother?"

"He went into hiding the moment he extracted the full audio file," Daniel said. He pocketed his phone and stepped closer, his imposing silhouette blocking out the soft amber light of the room. "My enforcers have been hunting him for four days thinking he was an ordinary thief. But rival operatives—the men working for the traitor who ordered the hit—are hunting him too. If my men find him first, he lives. If they find him first, his body will be at the bottom of Lake Michigan by sunrise."

Tears spilled over my eyelashes and trailed down my cheeks. "You have to save him. Please. Michael was trying to do the right thing."

Daniel looked down at my face, watching the tears fall, and then his gaze dropped to his infant son, who was still resting peacefully against my collarbone, breathing with steady, unlabored perfection.

"I will find him, Rachel. I will deploy every loyal soldier I have in the city to bring Michael into protective custody," Daniel said, his voice taking on an intense, unbreakable tone. "But you and I are making a deal right now."

"What kind of deal?"

"Dr. Miller told me two hours ago that Leo’s nervous system is so severely traumatized from the birth and the loss of his mother that he risks catastrophic developmental failure if he remains in this hospital. He needs round-the-clock specialized neonatal containment care. He needs you."

"Daniel, I work here. I have a career, a life—"

"You don't have a life if the people who killed my wife realize Michael Jenkins is your brother," Daniel interrupted harshly. "Do you think they won't look at his family tree? Do you think they won't send hitmen to your apartment the moment they realize Michael has an older sister working night shifts at St. Jude’s?"

Cold dread washed over me. He was right. If Michael was holding the evidence that could destroy a powerful mafia kingpin, I was the ultimate leverage.

"Starting tonight, you are Leo’s private, exclusive medical guardian," Daniel stated, his tone brooking no argument. "You will live at my private estate in Highland Park. You will have a fully equipped medical suite, private security, and complete authority over Leo’s health and routine. In exchange, I will wipe your brother’s fifty-thousand-dollar debt, I will bring him safely behind my estate’s perimeter walls, and I will place a five-million-dollar trust fund in your name."

"I don't care about the five million dollars," I said, my voice steadying despite the terror coursing through my veins. "I want your word as a father that you will protect my brother with the same firepower you use to protect your own son."

Daniel stared at me. For a long, tense moment, the room was so quiet that only Leo’s soft breathing could be heard. Then, slowly, Daniel reached out his right hand.

"You have my word on my son’s life, Rachel Jenkins."

I looked at his massive, scarred hand. Then, balancing Leo securely against my chest with my left arm, I placed my smaller hand into his. His grip was warm, firm, and possessed an electric, dangerous strength that sent a shiver down my spine.

"Pack what you need from your locker," Daniel said quietly, releasing my hand. "We move Leo by armored medical transport in twenty minutes. Welcome to the Russo family, Rachel. Pray you’re as brave as you look."
