Chapter 11 - The Trap Is Sprung at the Harbor Warehouse

The rain had stopped, replaced by a thick, spectral fog rolling off the freezing surface of Lake Michigan.
Highland Manor was shrouded in total darkness. Daniel had ordered all interior and exterior lights extinguished, transforming the sprawling estate into a silent, stone labyrinth.
Down in the sub-basement panic vault, forty feet beneath the ground, the air was cool and dead silent. The vault was furnished with emergency medical supplies, beds, fresh water, and a bank of CCTV monitors displaying every angle of the estate grounds.
I sat on the edge of a cot, holding Leo tightly against my chest, humming softly to keep him calm. Mrs. Gable sat beside me, clutching a rosary in her lap, while Michael stood glued to the surveillance screens with a tactical radio headset strapped over his ear.
On Monitor 4, the fog on the private pebble beach shifted.
Three rigid-hulled inflatable tactical speedboats glided silently onto the shore. Eight men wearing black night-vision goggles and tactical assault armor stepped onto the gravel, carrying suppressed submachine guns.
Leading them, holding a customized assault rifle with a crazed, desperate look in his eyes, was Marcus Russo.
"They're on the beach," Michael whispered into the radio mic, his hands trembling. "Daniel, they're moving past the boathouse toward the lower stone stairs. Exactly as predicted."
On the monitor, Marcus signaled his men to advance in two four-man tactical wedges. They moved swiftly, believing the security cameras were still frozen on the digital ghost loop Michael had maintained.
The moment Marcus’s lead mercenary stepped onto the top stone terrace of the courtyard, the night erupted in fire.
Four industrial-grade stadium spotlights mounted on the roof of the manor blazed to life simultaneously, blinding Marcus’s men with ten thousand lumens of pure white light.
"Drop your weapons!" Luca’s voice boomed over the estate’s external PA system.
From behind the stone balustrades, upper balconies, and reinforced courtyard pillars, Daniel’s loyal soldiers opened fire.
A hail of controlled, suppressive gunfire chewed through the gravel at Marcus’s feet. Two of Marcus's lead mercenaries were neutralized instantly before they could raise their weapons.
"Ambush! Fall back to the boats!" Marcus shrieked, his voice carrying through the tactical audio feed on Michael’s screen.
Marcus turned and fired wildly behind him as his remaining men scattered across the terrace, desperately seeking cover behind the stone fountain and boathouse walls.
On Monitor 1, Daniel appeared like an angel of vengeance.
Wearing full tactical armor and moving with lethal, terrifying speed, Daniel advanced down the grand stone staircase, flanked by Luca. Every shot Daniel fired was precise, calculated, and devastating. One by one, Marcus’s hired mercenaries dropped, outmaneuvered and outgunned by men defending their home and their family.
"Daniel! Watch the boathouse roof!" Michael shouted into the radio.
A mercenary concealed on the boathouse roof raised a scoped rifle, aiming directly at Daniel’s chest.
Before the sniper could pull the trigger, Luca spotted the glint of the scope, fired a burst from his carbine, and the shooter tumbled off the roof, crashing into the dark water below.
Marcus was now completely alone.

He sprinted desperately along the rocky seawall toward the last remaining speedboat, stumbling over the wet boulders, his rifle discarded in sheer terror.
Daniel vaulted over the stone balustrade, hitting the gravel in a dead sprint. In five massive strides, Daniel closed the distance, tackled Marcus around the waist, and slammed him hard against the jagged limestone boulders of the shoreline.
