Chapter 13 - The Midnight Siege of the Highland Estate

Down in the sub-basement panic vault, the CCTV monitors showed the beach being cleared, the mercenaries loaded into federal custody vans, and the perimeter secured.

The heavy hydraulic deadbolts of the vault hissed as the release mechanism engaged.

The three-ton steel door swung open smoothly.

Daniel stood in the doorway. His tactical vest was splattered with rain and lake water, his knuckles bruised, but his face was completely relaxed, his storm-gray eyes glowing with overwhelming relief.

The moment I saw him, tears spilled over my cheeks. I stood up from the cot, cradling Leo in my left arm, and ran across the concrete floor straight into Daniel’s embrace.

Daniel caught me, wrapping his powerful arms around both me and our baby, burying his face in my hair, breathing me in as if I were the breath of life itself.

"It’s over, Rachel," Daniel whispered against my ear, his voice thick with emotion. "It’s completely over. The house is safe. The city is safe. You and Leo will never have to run again."

Michael and Mrs. Gable walked out of the vault behind me, smiling through their tears. Michael stepped up, shaking Daniel’s hand with profound respect, while Mrs. Gable crossed herself, offering a silent prayer of thanksgiving.

Daniel pulled back slightly, looking down at Leo.

The baby had slept through the entire aftermath. He opened his big, bright blue eyes, looked up at Daniel’s face, and let out a soft, happy coo, his tiny fingers reaching out to touch Daniel’s bruised chin.

Daniel let out a quiet, breathless laugh—a sound so filled with pure, unadulterated joy that it echoed beautifully off the concrete walls.

"He knows his father," I whispered, resting my head against Daniel’s shoulder.

"He knows his mother, too," Daniel replied softly, kissing my lips with a tenderness that sealed every broken piece of our past.
