Chapter 7 - The Gala of Wolves and the Red Silk Dress

By 7:00 PM the following evening, the atmosphere inside Highland Manor was charged with electric tension.
The rescue at the South River docks had been executed with surgical brutality. Luca’s tactical team had neutralized the mercenary perimeter, extracted Michael without a scratch, and secured the physical flash drive from locker 402. Michael was currently resting under twenty-four-hour armed guard in the secure underground bunker of the estate.
The audio file had been verified. Marcus Russo’s voice was unmistakable: "The SUV will take the lower bridge at 8:15. Kill everyone in the vehicle. Make sure Daniel is left with nothing."
Now came the execution of the trap.
Tonight was the Solstice Charity Gala in the Grand Ballroom of the historic Drake Hotel on Michigan Avenue. Over four hundred high-society guests, city council members, judges, and high-ranking syndicate capos would be in attendance. Marcus planned to use the gala to publicly challenge Daniel’s leadership, claiming Daniel had become emotionally unhinged and unfit to lead following Camille’s death.
Daniel had other plans.
I stood in front of the full-length mirror in the master guest suite, staring at my reflection in disbelief. Mrs. Gable had brought in a private stylist two hours ago under Daniel’s orders.
I wore a floor-length evening gown of deep, shimmering crimson silk. The dress featured an elegant off-the-shoulder neckline, a fitted bodice that hugged my curves, and a subtle slit up the left side. My dark hair was swept up into a sophisticated chignon, with delicate diamond drop earrings framing my face. I looked nothing like the exhausted NICU nurse who had walked into Suite A four days ago.
The connecting door opened, and Daniel stepped into the room.
He wore a bespoke black tuxedo with a crisp white dress shirt and a black silk bow tie. He looked devastatingly handsome—imposing, aristocratic, and radiating an aura of dangerous, untouchable power.
When his eyes landed on me, he stopped dead in his tracks. His gaze raked over me from head to toe, his pupils dilating with an intensity that made my breath catch in my throat.
"You look... breathtaking, Rachel," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a low, husky register.
"I feel like an imposter," I admitted, smoothing down the silk fabric with trembling hands. "These people... they're killers, politicians, billionaires. I’m just a nurse."
Daniel walked across the room until he was standing directly in front of me. The heat radiating from his body was intoxicating. He reached into his tuxedo pocket and pulled out a velvet box. Inside rested a necklace of flawless, shimmering diamonds centered around a deep red ruby.
"You are the woman who saved my son’s life," Daniel said, lifting the necklace from the velvet. "You are braver than every man who will be in that ballroom tonight."
He stepped behind me. I shivered as his warm fingers brushed against the sensitive skin of my neck while he fastened the clasp. His hands lingered on my bare shoulders for a second longer than necessary.
"Tonight, you stay by my side," Daniel murmured near my ear, his deep voice sending shivers down my spine. "You hold your head high. Let them look at you and wonder how a man like me found an angel like you."
I turned around to face him, looking up into his storm-gray eyes. "And what about Leo?"
"Leo is in the panic suite with Mrs. Gable and four of my most loyal snipers," Daniel assured me. "The estate is in total lockdown. No one gets in or out until we return."
He extended his arm. "Ready to face the wolves?"
I slipped my hand into the crook of his arm. "With you? Always."
The Drake Hotel ballroom was a dazzling sea of champagne flutes, tuxedoes, and sparkling diamond jewelry when we arrived.
The moment the grand double doors opened and Daniel Russo walked in with me on his arm, a hush fell over the room. Whispers rippled through the crowd like a shockwave. For two weeks, the underworld had believed Daniel was broken, hiding in mourning. Instead, he had walked into the lion’s den looking more powerful, dominant, and lethal than ever before—with a stunning, unfamiliar woman by his side.
Across the ballroom, standing near the champagne fountain surrounded by three city aldermen and two rival captains, was Marcus Russo.
When Marcus saw Daniel—and saw me wearing the Russo family heirloom ruby necklace—his smug smile vanished. The glass of vintage champagne in his hand shook slightly.
Daniel led me through the crowd with effortless grace, nodding politely to judges and business moguls who parted before him like the Red Sea.
"Daniel! You made it," Marcus said, stepping forward, forcing a wide, artificial smile across his face. "And Miss Jenkins. My, you clean up remarkably well for hospital staff."
"Marcus," Daniel said smoothly, taking a flute of sparkling water from a passing waiter and handing it to me. "I hear you’ve been busy while I was tending to my son."
"Just keeping the family interests stable while you grieved, cousin," Marcus replied, his hazel eyes darting nervously between Daniel’s calm expression and the silent earpiece in his own ear. "Though some of our associates from New York were hoping to discuss restructuring our distribution routes tonight."
"There will be no restructuring," Daniel said, his voice quiet, calm, and carrying an absolute, terrifying weight. "Because by midnight, the Moretti family won't have a single operative left alive in Chicago."
Marcus’s face lost all its color. "What did you say?"
Daniel leaned in, his lips inches from Marcus’s ear. "Locker 402, Marcus. We have the tape. We have the bank transfers. Enjoy the champagne. It’s the last glass you’ll ever drink."
Daniel straightened his cuffs, turned to me, and offered his arm with a charming, easy smile. "Shall we dance, Rachel?"
Leaving Marcus paralyzed with sheer terror in the middle of the ballroom, Daniel led me onto the polished hardwood dance floor as the live orchestra began playing a slow, sweeping waltz.
He pulled me against his chest, his right hand resting firmly on the small of my back, his left hand holding mine with gentle strength. We moved across the floor in perfect, effortless synchronicity.
"You terrified him," I whispered, looking up into his eyes.
"He's a dead man walking," Daniel replied, spinning me smoothly beneath his arm. "Luca’s team has already surrounded the hotel exits. We let him panic, let him try to run, and then we take him down quietly outside."
As the music swelled, Daniel pulled me closer, eliminating all space between us. His eyes locked onto mine with an unmasked, fierce tenderness.
"When this is over, Rachel..." Daniel murmured, his voice soft against the music. "I want you to stay. Not as an employee. Not as a nurse. As my partner. Leo’s mother. My wife."
My breath caught in my throat. My heart raced wildly, not from fear, but from the breathtaking realization that I had fallen completely, irreversibly in love with this dangerous, fiercely loyal man.

Before I could answer, the ballroom’s emergency alarms shrieked. The massive crystal chandeliers suddenly flickered and plunged into total darkness.
Gunfire erupted from the service entrance.
