Chapter 10 - The Phantom in the Security Feeds

The following afternoon, Highland Manor was transformed into an impenetrable command center. Michael sat surrounded by six glowing multi-monitor workstations in the estate's private communications hub, working side by side with Luca and Daniel.
I sat nearby with Leo cradled against my chest, feeding him from a sterilized bottle while watching the monitors. Leo drank hungrily, his weight now fully stabilized, his small hand wrapped tightly around my pinky finger.
"Boss, I found the anomaly," Michael announced suddenly, his fingers flying across his mechanical keyboard like lightning.
Daniel walked over, leaning over Michael’s shoulder. "What do you have, Michael?"
"I ran an automated recursive algorithm comparing the estate’s external perimeter surveillance logs over the last forty-eight hours with the master grid server," Michael explained, bringing up a split-screen 3D schematic of the Highland Park property. "Look at the western stone wall near the old boathouse on the lake."
On the screen, the security feed showed a looping, static three-second clip of trees swaying in the rain.
"It’s a digital ghost loop," Michael said, pointing to the timestamps. "Someone installed a localized hardware bypass directly into junction box 14 on the shoreline three days ago. To the security room, the western beach looks totally clear. But in reality, the infrared motion sensors on that entire two-hundred-yard stretch of shoreline are completely dead."
Luca cursed under his breath. "That was Marcus's doing before he fled. He prepared a blind entry corridor."
"He didn't just prepare an escape route," Daniel said, his eyes darkening with cold realization. "He prepared an infiltration vector. Marcus knows he has no money, no territory, and no allies left in Chicago. The Morettis won't protect a failed capo."
"Then what is he doing?" I asked, cold dread creeping up my spine as I tightened my grip on Leo.
"He only has one play left," Daniel said, turning to look at me and his son. "He wants Leo. If he takes my son hostage, he can force me to sign over our international banking routing codes and surrender the family territory in exchange for Leo’s life."
"Over my dead body," Luca growled, racking the slide of his tactical sidearm.
"Michael, can you trace if the bypass hardware has received an incoming activation ping?" Daniel asked.
Michael hit four keystrokes. A red pulse flashed across the bottom of the screen.
Signal Ping: Active. Remote trigger initiated 14 minutes ago from an offshore marine vessel.
"He's already on the water," Michael gasped, looking up with wide, terrified eyes. "Daniel... Marcus is bringing a strike team across Lake Michigan by speedboat right now. They’re landing at the boathouse in less than twenty minutes!"
Daniel didn't panic. His mind worked with the icy, terrifying calculation of a seasoned general.
"Michael, leave the loop running. Let Marcus think his blind corridor is still undetected," Daniel ordered smoothly. "Luca, assemble all twelve soldiers in the armory. We let them breach the beach, let them enter the lower courtyard, and we box them into the kill zone between the boathouse and the seawall."
"Understood, Boss," Luca said, sprinting out of the room.
Daniel walked over to me, looking down at Leo, who was burping softly against my shoulder, completely calm.
"Rachel, take Leo down to the reinforced panic vault beneath the wine cellar," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a tender, protective whisper. "The steel door has a three-ton hydraulic deadbolt. No explosive charge can breach it. Take Mrs. Gable and Michael with you."
"Daniel, you have to be careful," I pleaded, tears shining in my eyes as I reached up to touch his face. "Please... don't let him take you from us."
Daniel leaned down, kissing Leo’s forehead, and then pressed a deep, passionate kiss to my lips.
"I will come back to you, Rachel. I swear it on our future," Daniel promised.

He pulled a small gold master key from his pocket and pressed it into my hand. "Lock the vault from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except my voice."
I nodded, clutching the key tightly. "We'll be waiting."
