Chapter 20 - The Heir to the Light

The private maternity suite at the hospital overlooked the entire city.
Gunther stood by the large window, holding a tiny, fragile bundle wrapped in a soft white blanket.
He looked down at his newborn daughter, entirely mesmerized by her perfect, sleeping face.
She had a head full of dark hair and her mother’s delicate features.
He had named her Elena, meaning shining light.
He walked slowly back to the hospital bed and sat gently on the edge.
Kayla looked exhausted, but she was glowing with an otherworldly beauty.
She reached out and traced her finger over the baby’s incredibly soft cheek.
"She is perfect," Kayla whispered, tears of profound joy filling her eyes.
"She is exactly like you," Gunther replied, leaning down to kiss his wife's forehead.
He looked at the two women who held his entire soul in their hands.
He thought about the terrifying, violent life he used to lead.
He thought about the night he walked into his bedroom and found a scuffed, exhausted maid sleeping in his bed.
That single moment of mercy had rewritten his entire destiny.
He had built an empire of blood, but Kayla had turned it into a sanctuary.
"I love you, Gunther Woods," Kayla murmured, resting her head against his chest.
"I love you more than life itself," Gunther swore fiercely, wrapping his free arm around her shoulders.
He looked out the window at the city he ruled.
There were no more shadows to fight.
The monster was gone forever, completely vanquished by the queen of his empire.
