Chapter 15 - The Interrogation

The estate was locked down tighter than it had ever been during the Russian war.

Victor had survived the blast with a mild concussion and a fractured rib.

He sat in the study, pressing an ice pack to his head, looking entirely furious.

"They had to have inside help to get those crates past customs," Victor growled.

"Someone sold us out."

Gunther sat behind his mahogany desk, his face carved from dark stone.

Lorenzo had escaped the water and vanished into the city, leaving his surviving men behind.

Gunther’s guards had captured one of the Italian mercenaries alive at the docks.

"Bring him in," Gunther commanded softly.

Two massive guards dragged a battered, bleeding man into the study and forced him to his knees.

Kayla sat in her chair in the corner, her face completely unreadable.

Gunther stood up and walked slowly around the desk.

He did not yell.

He did not posture.

He simply radiated an aura of pure, concentrated violence.

"Who opened the port for you?" Gunther asked, his voice a low, terrifying whisper.

The mercenary spat a mouthful of blood onto the expensive Persian rug.

"Go to hell," the man sneered.

Gunther did not blink.

He drew his weapon and shot the man in the kneecap without a single ounce of hesitation.

The man collapsed, screaming in pure agony.

Kayla did not flinch.

She had accepted the darkness in her husband a long time ago, knowing he only unleashed it to protect their family.

"I am going to ask you one more time," Gunther said, pointing the barrel at the man's other leg.

"Who is the rat?"

The mercenary sobbed, clutching his shattered leg.

"Dante!" he choked out.

"It was Dante!"

Victor stood up abruptly, the ice pack falling from his hand.

Dante was one of Victor’s most trusted captains, the man in charge of securing the eastern docks.

"He promised Lorenzo the shipping lanes if Lorenzo helped him take the city from you," the mercenary confessed.

Gunther lowered his weapon.

He looked over at Victor, seeing the absolute betrayal burning in his friend's eyes.

"Find Dante," Gunther ordered coldly.

"And bring him to me in pieces."
