Chapter 2 - The Price of Loyalty

Kayla perched on the very edge of the mattress, terrified to put any weight on it.

She kept her hands folded tightly in her lap, staring at her scuffed black work shoes.

Gunther walked over to the small bar cart and poured a glass of ice water.

He handed it to her, his fingers brushing briefly against hers.

His touch was surprisingly warm.

Kayla took the glass with shaking hands, desperate for the moisture in her dry throat.

"Drink," he ordered gently.

She took a slow sip, keeping her eyes cast downward.

"You worked a sixteen-hour shift yesterday," Gunther stated, reading the invisible ledger of her life.

"Why are you working double shifts, Kayla?"

She swallowed hard, unsure if she was allowed to speak freely.

"I need the money, sir," she whispered.

"For what?" he pressed, stepping closer to her.

"My younger brother," she confessed, the truth slipping out before she could stop it.

"He was in a car accident two years ago."

"He needs specialized physical therapy, and insurance will not cover it."

Gunther stared down at her, processing the information with cold, mechanical efficiency.

He lived in a world where people killed for power, greed, and territory.

This girl was destroying her own body just to heal someone else's.

It was a profound vulnerability that he found deeply fascinating.

"How much do you owe the clinic?" Gunther asked.

"Sixty thousand dollars," Kayla answered, a tear finally escaping and rolling down her cheek.

"It is a lot, but I am paying it off slowly."

Gunther reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

He typed a brief message and hit send without looking away from her.

"The debt is cleared," Gunther said casually.

Kayla’s head snapped up, her brown eyes wide with absolute shock.

"What?" she breathed.

"I just wired the funds to the clinic, paid in full," he explained, as if discussing the weather.

"You no longer owe them a single dime."

Kayla stood up, the glass of water shaking violently in her hand.

"You cannot do that," she panicked.

"I cannot pay you back."

"I am just a maid."

Gunther took a step forward, completely invading her personal space.

He looked down at her pale, exhausted face.

"You are no longer a maid," Gunther declared.

"You are now my personal assistant."

"Your salary is three hundred thousand dollars a year."

"You will answer only to me."

"You will not scrub another floor in this house."

Kayla felt the room spinning again.

"Why are you doing this?" she asked, her voice breaking.

"Because you slept in my bed, Kayla," he replied softly.

"And in my world, everything has a price."

"I am buying your time, your loyalty, and your presence."

He reached out and gently tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

"Go home, sleep for twelve hours, and report to my study tomorrow morning."

"If you run, I will find you."

May you like

Kayla nodded silently, entirely overwhelmed by the monster who had just saved her life.

She turned and walked out of the bedroom, leaving her cleaning cart behind in the hallway.
