Chapter 9 - The Trap is Set at the Gala

By Sunday afternoon, the stage was fully set for the confrontation.

Detective Rivera had coordinated with the State Financial Crimes Bureau and the County District Attorney’s Special Investigations Unit. Six plainclothes undercover officers and a tactical surveillance van were deployed around the perimeter of the Vance estate, disguised as municipal utility vehicles and landscaping vans.

Inside the Vance mansion, Vanessa was buzzing with manic energy. She had spent the entire afternoon setting the grand dining table with Clara’s finest antique china, sterling silverware, and crystal wine glasses. She wore a stunning crimson silk evening dress, her hair pinned up elegantly, exuding the confidence of a woman about to inherit tens of millions of dollars.

At 7:30 PM, a black sedan pulled into the long driveway.

Julian Mercer stepped out, carrying a sleek leather briefcase containing the notarized trust amendments and revised power-of-attorney documents. Underneath his tailored suit jacket, nestled in his inner breast pocket, was the small amber glass vial containing the digitalis extract.

Vanessa met him at the foyer doors, wrapping her arms around his neck and planting a passionate kiss on his lips.

"It’s finally happening, Julian," Vanessa whispered against his ear, her eyes glittering with greed. "He bought the entire story. He thinks he’s signing over the estate out of love and guilt."

Julian smiled coldly, setting his briefcase on the hall table. "Is the wine prepared?"

"The Bordeaux is breathing on the sideboard," Vanessa said, leading him into the formal dining room. "I’ll pour his glass right before we sit down for the celebratory toast after the signatures. One drop in his vintage wine, and by midnight, he’ll have sudden cardiac arrest in his sleep. The grief of losing Clara, the stress of running his company... nobody will question a thing."

"And the girl?" Julian asked, raising an eyebrow.

"She’s at his sister’s until tomorrow," Vanessa sneered dismissively. "Once Ethan is declared dead, we take legal custody as the sole executors. We put her in that boarding facility in upstate New York by next week, and the twenty-five-million-dollar trust is entirely ours to liquidate."

Julian chucked, pulling the small glass vial from his pocket and handing it to Vanessa. "To a very prosperous new life, my love."

What neither of them noticed were the microscopic fiber-optic pinhole cameras installed inside the smoke detectors and chandelier above them—broadcasting every word, every gesture, and every frame of 4K video directly into the surveillance van parked three hundred yards down the road.

Inside the van, Ethan sat alongside Detective Rivera and Assistant District Attorney Catherine Brooks, watching the live monitor with grim satisfaction.

"We have full audio, visual, and physical evidence of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, attempted poisoning, and grand larceny," Catherine Brooks stated, turning to the tactical squad leader. "Move in on Ethan's signal."

Ethan took off his headphones, his face set in hard lines of absolute resolve.

"Let me go in first," Ethan said quietly. "I want to look them in the eyes when their world comes crashing down."
