Chapter 8 - The Nanny Who Knew Too Much

While Marcus tracked the digital communications, Ethan returned to the living room of the safehouse where Mrs. Higgins was sitting beside the fireplace, gently brushing Lily’s golden hair while the little girl colored in a new sketchbook.
Seeing his daughter safe, warm, and smiling faintly gave Ethan the strength he needed to see this nightmare through to the end.
"Daddy!" Lily beamed, holding up her drawing. It was a picture of Ethan, Lily, and a smiling angel with golden wings in the clouds labeled Mommy. "Nanny helped me draw Mommy’s smile."
Ethan knelt beside them, kissing Lily’s cheek and holding her small hand. "It’s beautiful, Lily-bug. Mommy is smiling down on you right now, and she is so proud of how brave you are."
Mrs. Higgins gave Lily a gentle pat on the shoulder. "Why don't you go into the sunroom and play with the puzzle I set up for you, sweetie? Daddy and I need to talk for a moment."
Lily skipped happily toward the sunroom, clutching her white teddy bear.
Once the door was closed, Mrs. Higgins turned to Ethan, her face lined with deep sorrow and regret. "Ethan... there is something I must tell you. Something I’ve kept inside because I was terrified of what it might do to you."
Ethan’s brow furrowed. "What is it, Martha?"
The elderly woman reached into her cardigan pocket and pulled out an old, worn USB flash drive attached to a silver keychain with Clara’s initials engraved upon it.
"Two weeks before Clara passed away in the hospital," Mrs. Higgins said, her voice trembling, "she called me into her private room when you had stepped out to talk with the oncologists. She knew she didn't have much time left. But more than that... Clara was suspicious of Julian Mercer."
Ethan leaned forward, his heart thumping. "Clara knew?"
"Clara had noticed unauthorized audit requests on her family trust months before she fell sick," Mrs. Higgins explained, tears welling in her eyes. "She recorded a private video message on this drive. She instructed me to keep it hidden, to give it to you only if someone ever tried to alter the terms of Lily’s trust or if someone claiming to be her friend appeared in your life. When Vanessa showed up months ago, I tried to warn you, Ethan! But you were so lost in your grief, and Vanessa was so cunning... she had me fired from the estate before I could reach you."
Ethan gripped the silver USB drive tightly in his palm. The cold metal bit into his skin.
"She fired you?" Ethan whispered, realizing how Vanessa had systematically isolated him from every single person who truly loved Clara and Lily.

"She threatened to accuse me of theft if I ever contacted you again," Mrs. Higgins sobbed. "I’m so sorry, Ethan. I should have fought harder. I should have protected little Lily."
"You did protect her, Martha," Ethan said softly, embracing the elderly woman. "You kept this drive safe. Clara knew this day would come, and she left us the final weapon we need to finish this."
