Chapter 10 - Confrontation in the Rain

At exactly 8:00 PM, thunder rumbled across the dark autumn sky, and rain began to pelt against the tall arched windows of the Vance estate.
The front door clicked open.
Ethan walked into the grand foyer, removing his wet coat and hanging it on the rack. The air was thick with the scent of roasted herbs and expensive wine.
"Ethan, darling! You’re right on time!" Vanessa’s voice rang out from the dining room.
Ethan walked into the candlelit room. Vanessa sat at the head of the table, looking radiant in red, while Julian Mercer sat to her right, holding a sleek silver fountain pen beside two thick stacks of legal documents.
"Ethan, good to see you again," Julian said, standing up and extending a hand with a polished, professional smile. "I was deeply touched when Vanessa told me you wanted to honor Clara’s wishes by consolidating the trust under family management."
Ethan looked at Julian’s outstretched hand, ignoring it completely, and pulled out the chair at the opposite end of the table. He sat down slowly.
"Julian. It’s been eight months since Clara’s funeral," Ethan said, his voice smooth, steady, and chillingly polite. "You left our company rather abruptly after she passed."
"Well, grief affects us all in different ways," Julian replied smoothly, reclaiming his seat and sliding the contracts across the polished mahogany table toward Ethan. "These documents transfer full secondary executive power to Vanessa upon signature and notarization. Once you sign on page twelve and eighteen, the trust will be legally protected under joint matrimonial custody."
Vanessa smiled warmly, picking up a heavy crystal decanter and pouring deep crimson wine into Ethan’s glass. She had already slipped the colorless drops of digitalis into the glass before he walked through the door.
"To our new beginning, Ethan," Vanessa said softly, raising her own glass. "To family, healing, and the future."
Ethan looked down at the swirling red wine in front of him. The candlelight danced across the crystal surface.
He didn't touch the glass. Instead, he reached into his suit jacket, pulled out the silver USB flash drive, and placed it squarely in the middle of the table.
Julian and Vanessa both froze.
"What is that, Ethan?" Vanessa asked, her smile faltering slightly.
"This is Clara’s final message to me," Ethan said, looking directly into Vanessa’s widening eyes. "Recorded two weeks before she died. She left it with Martha Higgins."

Vanessa’s face went completely pale. The glass in her hand began to tremble. "Martha? That senile old woman was fired—"
"She wasn't senile," Ethan interrupted, his voice dropping into a harsh, razor-sharp register. "And you aren't Vanessa Sterling. Are you, Vanessa Crowley?"
