Chapter 4 - The Secret Room in the Attic

"I’m telling you, Julian, he came home early!" Vanessa’s voice hissed into the receiver, sharp and filled with panic. "The little brat was mopping the floor when he walked in. He saw everything."
Ethan froze on the stairs, his senses hyper-alert. Julian? Who the hell was Julian?
"No, he didn't call the police, but he’s furious," Vanessa continued, pacing near the heavy velvet drapes. "The wedding is in jeopardy if I don't fix this tonight. Did you finish transferring the foundation documents from the safe? If he looks into Clara's estate account before the wedding, we’re finished. We need that signature on the trust amendment before he realizes what's missing."
A long silence followed as the person on the other end spoke.
"I don't care how you do it, just make sure the paperwork is ready for the notary on Monday," Vanessa spat. "Once we’re legally married, Clara’s family trust defaults to my joint authority. I’m not spending another month babysitting that miserable child for nothing. Call me back in an hour."
She hung up the phone with a sharp tap of her screen, running a hand through her hair before walking toward the master bedroom on the opposite wing of the house.
Ethan stood in the shadows, his pulse pounding in his temples. This was no longer just an issue of cruelty and emotional abuse. This was calculated fraud, premeditated exploitation, and possibly something far darker. Clara had come from an old-money New England family, and upon her passing, she had placed her extensive family estate—worth over twenty-five million dollars—into an irrevocable trust meant strictly for Lily upon her twenty-first birthday. Ethan was the executor, but he had never touched a dime of it, wanting Lily to have everything her mother left behind.
How did Vanessa know about Clara’s trust? And who was Julian?
Waiting until he heard the master bedroom door click shut, Ethan quietly escorted Lily into his personal study, locking the heavy oak door behind them. He ordered a warm meal from a private catering service he trusted, having it delivered discreetly to the side gate, and set Lily up on the leather sofa with her favorite cartoons and the giant white teddy bear he had brought home.
"Stay here with Mr. Bear, Lily. Daddy has to check something upstairs, okay?"
"Okay, Daddy," Lily said, her tummy finally full, looking visibly relaxed in the warmth of the locked study.
Ethan grabbed his master keys and climbed the narrow, hidden spiral staircase that led to the attic—a vast, climate-controlled space where Clara had kept her vintage art collections, family heirlooms, and personal keepsakes before she fell ill.
When Ethan reached the top of the stairs, he noticed something strange immediately.
The heavy padlock on Clara’s private storage room had been replaced with a modern electronic keypad lock.
Vanessa had claimed she only went up to the attic to store seasonal decorations. Why would she install an encrypted biometric lock on a room full of Clara’s old family boxes?
Ethan pulled a specialized security bypass tool from his utility belt—a device he used when inspecting high-security architectural sites. Within three minutes, the digital mechanism clicked and flashed green.
The door swung open, revealing the room inside.
It was not a storage space anymore. It had been transformed into an illicit, makeshift office. Spread across two folding tables were dozens of open folders, bank statements, legal ledgers, and forged death certificates bearing Clara Vance’s name.
And taped to the center of the corkboard was a photograph that made Ethan’s blood run completely cold.

It was a photograph of Vanessa, smiling on a beach in Miami, wrapped in the arms of a handsome, dark-haired man.
A man Ethan recognized instantly: Julian Mercer—Clara’s former corporate accountant who had mysteriously resigned two weeks after her funeral.
