Chapter 7 - The Mysterious Phone Call in the Garden

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the room.
Ethan stared at the glowing monitors, the digital trail of his own planned assassination laid out in cold, calculated numbers and shipping codes. The digitalis toxin—an odorless, colorless cardiac stimulant that mimics the symptoms of a massive natural heart attack—would have left virtually no trace in a standard autopsy on a high-stress corporate executive.
"They wanted everything," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "They wanted Clara’s trust, my construction empire, the life insurance policies... and Lily."
"And if you were gone, Lily would have been completely at their mercy as her legal guardians until they systematically drained the accounts and dumped her in a remote state institution," Marcus added grimly. "We have enough financial fraud evidence to bring civil charges, Ethan. But for attempted murder and conspiracy? We need Vanessa and Julian holding the smoking gun. We need them in the room together, attempting the transfer with the poison in their possession."
"They will be," Ethan said, a dangerous glint entering his eyes. "Vanessa thinks I’m completely oblivious. She thinks I’m a broken, grieving widower who bought her crying routine last night. Let's give them the exact opportunity they’ve been waiting for."
Ethan pulled out his phone and dialed his personal estate landline.
Back at the Vance estate, Vanessa was sitting in the conservatory, sipping mimosa and admiring a bridal magazine. When the phone rang, she picked it up smoothly.
"Hello, darling," Vanessa purred. "How is Lily doing at your sister’s?"
"She's fine. She's resting," Ethan said, modulating his tone to sound tired, vulnerable, and emotionally drained. "Vanessa... I’ve been thinking about what happened last night on the drive up here."
"Oh, Ethan, I feel so terrible—"
"No, you were right," Ethan lied convincingly, letting out a heavy, scripted sigh. "I’ve been letting my grief over Clara cloud my judgment. I've been neglecting you, and I haven't given our future the commitment it deserves. I want to make things right."
Vanessa sat upright, her eyes widening with greed. "What do you mean, Ethan?"
"I called my estate attorney, Mr. Harrison. I told him to draft the full joint executive authority papers for Clara’s trust fund and my primary corporate accounts. I want you to have full equal power over everything starting tomorrow."
Vanessa had to physically bite her lip to keep from screaming with delight. "Ethan... that’s... that is so generous of you! You won't regret this, darling. I promise to protect this family forever!"
"There’s one condition," Ethan added, his voice low. "Mr. Harrison is out of town, but Julian Mercer still retains legal notary privileges from his time managing Clara’s accounts. I’ve contacted Julian. He agreed to come to our home tomorrow evening at 8:00 PM to notarize the signatures and finalize the trust transfer over a private dinner."
"Julian? Oh... yes! That’s wonderful! Julian knows Clara’s portfolio better than anyone!" Vanessa stammered, barely containing her excitement.
"Good. Prepare a nice dinner for three, Vanessa. I’ll return tomorrow evening alone so we can conclude our business without any distractions."

"I’ll make your favorite, darling. Safe travels."
Vanessa hung up the phone and immediately dialed Julian. As she stepped out onto the garden terrace to speak freely, she had no idea that Detective Marcus Rivera had already patched into her cellular signal, recording every single second of the conversation.
