Chapter 13 - Justice Falls in the Courtroom

Four months later, the spring sun shone brightly over the municipal county courthouse.
The trial of Vanessa Crowley and Julian Mercer had become a national sensation, but Ethan had ensured that Lily was completely shielded from the media circus. With ironclad digital evidence, dark-web transaction records, DNA matches on the digitalis vial, and forensic accounting confirming millions in embezzled assets, the jury took less than ninety minutes to reach a verdict.
Inside the crowded courtroom, the judge banged his heavy wooden gavel.
"On the charges of Attempted Aggravated Murder, Conspiracy to Commit Capital Murder, Grand Larceny in the First Degree, and Felony Child Endangerment," the judge proclaimed, looking down from the bench with severe authority, "this court finds the defendants, Vanessa Crowley and Julian Mercer, GUILTY on all counts."
Gasps and murmurs rippled across the gallery.
Vanessa, dressed in a faded orange prison jumpsuit, broke down into uncontrollable hysterics, burying her face into the defense desk as the bailiffs restrained her. Julian sat frozen in stunned silence, his face drained of all arrogance.
"For your calculated, predatory cruelty against a grieving family and an innocent child," the judge continued, "Julian Mercer is sentenced to thirty-five years in state maximum-security prison without the possibility of parole. Vanessa Crowley is sentenced to forty years in state maximum-security prison without the possibility of parole."
BANG!
The gavel slammed down, sealing their fate forever.
Ethan stood up calmly from the front row of the gallery. He didn't gloat. He didn't exchange words with the convicts. As Vanessa was dragged past him in chains, screaming out apologies that fell on deaf ears, Ethan turned his back on them completely and walked out of the courtroom into the warm spring air.
Waiting on the courthouse steps was Mrs. Higgins, holding Lily by the hand.
Lily wore a bright yellow sundress, her blonde hair styled in two neat French braids, bouncing with energy and health. When she saw Ethan walking down the steps, her face lit up like the morning sun.
"DADDY!" Lily squealed, letting go of Mrs. Higgins’ hand and sprinting across the courtyard.
Ethan dropped to one knee, catching his daughter in his arms, lifting her high into the air, and spinning her around as she giggled with pure, unbridled joy.

"Daddy, did you finish your boring adult meetings?" Lily asked, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck.
Ethan laughed, pressing a warm kiss against her forehead. "Yes, Lily-bug. All the boring meetings are finished forever."
