Chapter 6 - Uncovering the Financial Web

At six o'clock the following morning, while the mist still clung to the manicured lawns of the Vance estate, Ethan carried a still-sleeping Lily out to his SUV. He secured her safely in her car seat, covered her with her favorite blanket, and placed her white teddy bear in her arms.

Vanessa stood on the front porch in a silk dressing gown, waving with an exaggerated smile of wifely devotion. Ethan nodded curtly through the tinted window, shifted the car into drive, and sped through the iron gates.

He wasn't going to his sister's house.

Forty-five minutes later, Ethan pulled into the private driveway of a secluded, gated property on the outskirts of the city. Waiting on the porch was Detective Marcus Rivera, a retired homicide investigator and private forensic analyst who had been Ethan’s close friend for over fifteen years. Alongside him stood Mrs. Higgins, Clara’s former childhood nanny—a warm, silver-haired woman who had spent thirty years serving the family before retiring.

When Lily saw Mrs. Higgins, her eyes lit up for the first time in months.

"Nanny Higgins!" Lily gasped, throwing her arms around the older woman’s waist as she stepped out of the vehicle.

"Oh, my sweet little angel," Mrs. Higgins choked back tears, wrapping the girl in a fierce, loving embrace. "Look at you. You’re safe now, precious. Nanny has freshly baked cinnamon rolls and hot cocoa waiting inside for you."

Ethan handed Lily’s small overnight bag to Mrs. Higgins. "Keep her safe, Martha. Don't let anyone near this house."

"With my life, Ethan," Mrs. Higgins replied firmly, escorting the little girl into the warm, secure home.

Detective Rivera motioned for Ethan to follow him into his private home office, where three high-end computer monitors displayed financial spreadsheets, property registries, and bank transfer records.

"You were right to call me at 3:00 AM, Ethan," Marcus said, pulling up a detailed dossier on the central screen. "What you found in the attic is only the tip of the iceberg."

Ethan leaned over the desk, his eyes scanning the data. "What did you find on Vanessa Sterling and Julian Mercer?"

Marcus tapped the keyboard, opening a timeline of digital records. "Vanessa Sterling isn't even her real name. Her birth name is Vanessa Crowley. She’s a professional grifter with prior sealed records in Nevada and Florida. Five years ago, an elderly real estate developer died under suspicious circumstances in Tampa—three weeks after signing over half his estate to her in a revised will. The case went cold due to a lack of physical evidence."

Ethan’s jaw tightened until his teeth ached. "And Julian Mercer?"

"Mercer was the developer’s private accountant back then too," Marcus explained, pointing to financial cross-references on the screen. "Julian found out about Clara’s trust fund while working for your firm last year. He realized Clara’s trust contained a loophole: if Clara passed, and you remarried before Lily turned eighteen, a designated legal guardian could assume temporary executive control over the liquid assets to 'maintain the child's lifestyle' if you were ever declared incapacitated or deceased."

Ethan’s heart dropped like a stone. "Incapacitated?"

Marcus turned to face Ethan, his expression grave. "Ethan, three days ago, Julian Mercer purchased two vials of a concentrated digitalis toxin via an encrypted dark web marketplace, shipped to a private drop-box under Vanessa’s alias. If you hadn't come home early last night... they weren't just planning to marry you for the money. They were planning to kill you on your honeymoon."
