Chapter 9 - The Hidden Diary in the Charred Floorboards

The search at the Blackwood Lake ruins had yielded a piece of evidence so damning that it eliminated any remaining shred of doubt.

Inside the rusted, fireproof metal lockbox hidden beneath what used to be the cellar floorboards, forensic teams discovered Jessica’s personal diary from 2012, along with the original receipts for the three five-gallon containers of industrial acetone she had bought the morning of the fire.

In her own neat, cursive handwriting, Jessica had documented her entire plan:

"Julian won't take the money. He says he's going to tell Dad and the police. If he does that, Yale will revoke my admission. I can't let him ruin my life. Kristen is staying at the cabin this weekend studying. If the cabin catches fire, everyone will think Kristen left a heater on like she always does. Julian will be silenced, Kristen will take the blame, and Dad will clean up the mess like he always does. I have to protect my future."

When Sarah Lin read those words aloud in the conference room, the air grew completely still.

"She didn't just panic and start a fire," Ross said, his voice thick with cold disgust. "She premeditated the entire thing. She deliberately planned to frame you, Kristen, and she was willing to let both you and Julian burn to death to protect her college admission."

Tears pricked my eyes, not out of sadness, but out of the sheer horror of realizing how truly depraved my twin sister had always been. All those years of her calling me a monster, calling me 'Frankenstein,' whispering in my ear that I was repulsive—it had all been a desperate, twisted psychological defense mechanism to mask the true monster living inside herself.

"The State Attorney has upgraded the charges against Jessica Vance," Sarah Lin announced. "She is now facing two counts of Attempted First-Degree Premeditated Murder, one count of Aggravated Arson, and one count of Grand Larceny."

"When will the warrant be served?" I asked.

"Right now," Ross replied, standing up and reaching for his coat. "And she won't be able to buy her way out of this one."
