Chapter 5 - Adam's Real Face and the Broken Engagement

Adam Sterling stepped back three full paces, his jaw clenched so tightly that the muscles bulged against his skin. The Sterling family was old money—steel, real estate, and banking. Their reputation was pristine, and their legal department was ruthless.

"You did it for us?" Adam repeated, his voice cold enough to freeze water. "I didn't even know you twelve years ago, Jessica. You didn't do this for us. You did it because you are a sociopath."

"Adam, no! Listen to me!" Jessica pleaded, her tears now genuine, but born entirely out of self-pity and terror. "My parents handled it! It was resolved! Look at what Kristen is doing—she’s trying to ruin our wedding! She picked our birthday on purpose to destroy me!"

"You stripped her robe off, Jessica," Adam said, his eyes filled with utter disdain. "You dragged her into the center of this room to humiliate her for having scars that she got while saving your miserable life."

Adam reached into his breast pocket, pulled out the jeweler's appraisal document for the eight-carat emerald-cut engagement ring Jessica was wearing, and tore it in half, letting the scraps flutter into the pool.

"Take the ring off," Adam commanded quietly.

"Adam, please! The wedding is in six weeks! The deposits are paid!" Alice interjected desperately, rushing over to Adam. "Think of the business merger between Sterling Holdings and Vance Enterprises! We can fix this! We will issue a public statement blaming a misunderstanding—"

"Touch me again, Alice, and I’ll have my family’s attorneys audit every single joint venture we have with Vance Enterprises by tomorrow morning," Adam snapped, brushing her off with sheer disgust. "The engagement is off. The merger is dead. And if any member of the Vance family ever contacts me or my family again, we will file a restraining order."

Adam turned back to Jessica, his gaze piercing. "The ring. Now."

With trembling, tear-stained hands, Jessica slid the massive diamond off her finger and handed it to him. Adam took it, turned on his heel, and walked straight out of the ballroom without looking back once.

The sound of his departure was punctuated by the rapid clicking of smartphone shutters. Jessica dropped to her knees by the edge of the pool, clutching her designer gown, her face buried in her hands as she wailed in humiliation.

Mark Vance looked around the room. His business partners were actively turning their backs on him, whispering furiously into their phones, calling their brokers, and slipping out the side exits to distance themselves from the radioactive scandal unfolding before them.

"Kristen," Mark said, his voice dropping into a menacing whisper as he stepped toward me. "You have destroyed this family. You have destroyed our company. You will never see a single penny from the family trust. I will leave you on the street with nothing."

I looked at my father and smiled—a calm, peaceful smile that terrified him more than any scream could have.

"That's where you're wrong, Father," I said softly. "You don't own the trust anymore."
