Chapter 4 - The Twelve-Year Contract of Silence and Blood Money

Standing in the Halston Country Club ballroom twelve years later, I watched as Thomas Ross pulled out the original hospital intake records and the sworn affidavit from Julian himself.
"Julian woke up from his coma six months after the fire," Ross said to the stunned audience. "He had permanent brain damage, but his memories of that night were crystal clear. Before I could file formal attempted murder and arson charges against Jessica Vance, Mark Vance used his political connections to have me removed from the precinct."
Mark Vance was shaking with fury, his eyes bloodshot. "This is slander! Julian was a delinquent who tried to rob our home! We settled with his family out of court out of the kindness of our hearts!"
"Kindness?" I interjected, my voice cutting through Mark's bluster like a razor. "You paid Julian's impoverished mother three million dollars under a strict non-disclosure agreement to keep him in a private neurological facility in Oregon, far away from any reporters. And then you turned your attention to me."
I turned to face Alice, whose face was now a mask of pure terror.
"Tell them, Mother," I challenged. "Tell your friends what you told me in the burn ICU while the nurses were peeling dead flesh off my hips."
Alice backed away, her high heels catching the hem of her gown. "Kristen... please... you're destroying everything we built..."
"You told me that if the truth came out, Jessica would go to prison, the Vance family name would be ruined, the company's stock would crater, and we would lose everything," I said, reciting the words that had haunted my nightmares for over four thousand days. "You told me that my scars were already permanent, that my life was effectively ruined anyway because no wealthy man would ever marry a damaged, disfigured girl, but Jessica still had a chance at perfection."
Murmurs of absolute disgust rippled through the gathered crowd. Several women who had been Alice's closest social circle looked at her with unvarnished contempt.
"You forced me to sign a legal trust agreement when I was barely eighteen and doped on morphine," I continued, pointing directly at my father. "You threatened that if I ever told the police or a single living soul the truth, you would cut off the medical trust paying for my reconstructive surgeries and let me rot in debt. You traded my pain, my skin, and my silence to buy Jessica a spotless reputation."
Jessica was hyperventilating now, clutching Adam’s arm. "Adam, please! They're lying! Kristen is insane! She's always been jealous of me! Tell them to turn the cameras off!"
Adam Sterling looked down at Jessica's hand on his sleeve as if an insect were crawling on him. Slowly, deliberately, he pulled his arm away.
"Is this true, Jessica?" Adam asked, his voice shaking with a mixture of betrayal and repulsion. "Did you burn that cabin down? Did you leave Julian and your sister to die?"
"Adam, I did it for us!" Jessica blurted out, her composure completely disintegrating in a catastrophic slip of the tongue. "I was young! It was a mistake! It was an accident!"

The entire ballroom gasped. Jessica instantly realized what she had just admitted, clapping both hands over her mouth in horror.
She had just confessed in front of nearly two hundred witnesses and dozens of live-streaming cameras.
