Chapter 14 - The Final Verdict and the True Cost of Greed

On a crisp October morning, the federal judge handed down the final sentences in a packed courtroom.
Mark Vance: Sentenced to eighteen years in federal prison for racketeering, wire fraud, and witness tampering, with all personal assets confiscated for restitution.
Alice Vance: Sentenced to seven years for conspiracy and perjury, with five years of supervised probation.
Jessica Vance: Found guilty on all counts, including Attempted First-Degree Murder and Aggravated Arson. The judge sentenced her to twenty-two years at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, with no possibility of parole for the first fifteen years.
As the judge slammed the gavel down, concluding the trial, Jessica turned toward the gallery where I was sitting. Her face was hollow, pale, and devoid of the arrogant beauty she had once prized above human life.
"Kristen," she whispered through dry, cracked lips, tears streaming down her face. "Please... you're my sister. Help me."
I looked at her with neither hatred nor anger, but with the quiet, unshakeable calm of a woman who had finally reclaimed her destiny.

"I helped you twelve years ago, Jessica," I said softly. "I saved your life from the fire. But I cannot save you from yourself."
Jessica was led away through the heavy steel side doors, the metallic click of the locks echoing through the courtroom, closing the book on her reign of cruelty forever.
