Chapter 2 - The Mysterious Visitor and the Sealed Police Dossier

Thomas Ross did not hesitate. His heavy leather shoes clicked rhythmically against the Italian marble, cutting through the terrified silence of the ballroom. He was fifty-eight years old, with eyes like chipped slate and a jaw that looked carved from granite. He carried the aura of a man who had seen human depravity in all its smoldering, charred forms.

"Mark. Alice," Ross said, nodding curtly toward my parents as he came to a stop near the edge of the pool. "It’s been a long time. Twelve years, three months, and four days, to be exact."

Mark stepped forward, his chest puffed out in a desperate attempt to assert his usual corporate authority. "Ross, I don’t know what you think you’re doing here. This is a private family event. If you don't leave my club immediately, I will have security remove you and ensure your remaining pension is completely dismantled."

"You don't have the power you think you have, Mark," Ross replied calmly. He laid the heavy leather briefcase flat on a high-top table beside the champagne fountain, flicked the brass latches, and popped it open. "Especially not after what your daughter delivered to the State Attorney’s Office at eight o'clock this morning."

Jessica looked between our parents and the investigator, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. Her fiancé, Adam, looked thoroughly bewildered and increasingly agitated.

"What is this, Mark?" Adam demanded, crossing his arms and looking at his future father-in-law. "What is this guy talking about? What arson report?"

"Adam, darling, it's nothing," Alice said quickly, her voice hitting a high, hysterical pitch. She tried to grab Ross’s briefcase, but the investigator caught her wrist with clinical precision and pushed it away. "It's an old, settled matter! A tragedy that this disgruntled former officer has tried to extort our family over for over a decade!"

"Extort?" I laughed out loud. It was a clear, bitter sound that drew every pair of eyes back to me. "The only people who paid money were you and Dad, Mother. You paid half a million dollars to the county coroner and another million into an offshore account to have the physical evidence from the cabin sealed under a phony juvenile protection order."

"Shut up, Kristen!" Jessica screamed, lunging toward me with her manicured nails bared.

Before she could touch me, Ross stepped between us like a brick wall. "Miss Vance, I strongly advise you to keep your hands to yourself. There are four active surveillance cameras recording this terrace, plus fifty smartphones currently pointed in our direction."

Jessica froze. She glanced around. Ross was right. Dozens of guests—people who had spent the last five years kissing her feet in hopes of scoring invitations to the Vance summer galas—were holding up their phones, recording every second of the meltdown.

Ross pulled a thick, yellowed folder from the briefcase. The red stamp across the top read: STATE FIRE MARSHAL - CLASSIFIED INVESTIGATION REPORT #09-4412B.

"On July 14, 2012," Ross announced, his deep baritone carrying across the entire ballroom, "the Blackwood Lake secondary residence owned by the Vance family was completely destroyed by an accelerated chemical fire. The official statement given to the press by Mark Vance stated that an old propane heater had malfunctioned while his twin daughters were sleeping."

Ross paused, pulling out a set of high-resolution 8x10 forensic photographs. He held them up so the crowd could see the charred structural beams and the melted glass bottles.

"However," Ross continued, "our forensic analysis found six separate points of origin, all soaked in industrial-grade acetone. Acetone that was purchased four hours prior at a local hardware store using a credit card registered exclusively to Miss Jessica Vance."

Whispers erupted like wildfire among the guests.

"What?" Adam Sterling muttered, staring at his fiancée in pure horror. "Acetone? Jessica, you said you were asleep in the attic bedroom when Kristen accidentally knocked over an oil lamp!"

"She lied to you, Adam," I said, stepping closer. "She lied to you, she lied to the police, and she let our parents bury the truth so she could attend Yale while I lay in a medically induced coma for four months having dead skin sliced from my legs and back."
