Chapter 7 - Alice’s Breakdown: The Golden Child’s Toxic Origin

The ballroom had emptied out by nearly eighty percent. The high-society guests who had spent the evening flattering Alice had fled the building like rats fleeing a sinking ship, terrified of having their names associated with the impending criminal indictments.
Alice Vance was left standing in the center of the glittering wreckage, her emerald dress trailing through spilled champagne and ruined birthday cake. Her carefully lacquered facade had completely cracked, revealing the hollow, desperate woman underneath.
She staggered toward me, her eyes wild with grief and rage.
"How could you do this to your own mother?!" Alice screamed, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "I gave you life! I carried you! Everything I did was to protect this family! Do you have any idea how hard I worked to make sure Jessica was accepted into the highest social circles? To secure her future?!"
"You never cared about protecting the family, Alice," I said, refusing to call her mother. "You only cared about protecting your own reflection. Jessica was your mirror. You saw your own vanity, your own superficial ambitions in her. And you hated me because my scars were a permanent reminder that your perfect world was a lie."
"You were always bitter!" Alice shrieked, tears carving black tracks of mascara down her cheeks. "You were jealous of your sister from the day you were born! You wanted to drag her down to your level because you knew you would always be the ugly, broken twin!"
"Look at her, Alice," I said, pointing toward the pool.
Jessica was sitting in a puddle of water, shivering uncontrollably, her makeup smeared across her face, clutching the hem of her ruined designer dress. She looked pathetic, hollow, and utterly defeated.
"Who is broken now?" I asked quietly.
Alice looked at Jessica, then looked back at me, her mouth opening and closing soundlessly. For the first time in her life, she had no scripted lie to fall back on.
I pulled a small digital voice recorder from my clutch and held it up.
"Every conversation we had in private for the last three years—every threat Mark made, every time you told me to stay locked in the guest house so Jessica's friends wouldn't see me, every time you demanded I transfer my dividend checks to cover Jessica's luxury shopping sprees—it's all recorded," I told her. "It's all in the hands of the District Attorney."
Alice slumped onto a nearby velvet chair, burying her face in her hands, her shoulders heaving with silent, helpless sobs.

Mark was leaning against the marble bar, clutching his chest, breathing heavily as if having a panic attack, watching twelve years of carefully constructed deception vanish into the ether.
I bent down, picked up my white silk robe from the floor, and draped it over my arm. I had no desire to put it back on. For twelve years, I had hidden my skin in shame. Tonight, for the very first time, I felt no urge to cover the marks of my survival.
