Chapter 9 - The Broken Alliance And The Mother-Son Betrayal Behind Glass Walls

The bond between Brandon and Rosalyn had always seemed unbreakable—a united front of narcissism and entitlement. But when faced with twenty years in federal prison, that bond shattered into pieces.

Three days after the custody hearing, Evelyn received a formal notification from the U.S. Attorney’s Office: Brandon’s criminal defense team had requested a proffer session. Brandon wanted to testify against his own mother in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Evelyn and I were permitted to observe the recorded interrogation from behind a one-way mirror in the federal courthouse.

Brandon sat across from two federal prosecutors, looking hollow-eyed, unshaven, and broken. The swagger was completely gone.

"It was her idea," Brandon stammered, leaning forward over the metal table. "From the very beginning. My mother controlled all the family trusts. She told me that if Hannah ever left me, she would cut me out of the will completely. She said Hannah was too independent, that she asked too many questions about the company’s accounts."

"Did your mother instruct you to physically assault your wife on the night of October 14th?" the prosecutor asked.

"She told me to take the baby by force!" Brandon cried, tears streaming down his face. "She gave me the key to the bathroom door! She told me to hold Hannah down while she took Liam to the car! I didn't want to hurt her! My mother made me do it!"

Not twenty-four hours later, Rosalyn’s attorney requested an identical meeting.

Rosalyn sat in the exact same chair, her face hardened like stone, her voice cold and devoid of any motherly affection.

"Brandon is an unstable, violent boy," Rosalyn told the investigators without flinching. "He has had anger issues since high school. I tried to protect Hannah from him. I gave him the key because I was afraid he would break the door down and hurt the child. I took Hannah’s money only because Brandon begged me to hide it from his creditors. My son is a monster, and I am the victim of his manipulation."

Watching them tear each other apart behind the glass was like watching two scorpions trapped in a bottle. Neither of them cared about the truth. Neither of them cared about Liam. They cared only about saving their own miserable skins.

"They deserve each other," Chloe whispered beside me.

"They do," I agreed. "And neither of them will ever touch my son again."
