Chapter 3 - The Cold Light Of The ER And The Truth Written In Bruises

The county hospital examination room smelled of antiseptic and cold paper. A forensic nurse named Clara took over fifty high-resolution photographs of my injuries under stark fluorescent lighting.
Each flash was a record of their brutality. The purple thumb marks circling my throat. The bruised clump on my scalp where Brandon had ripped out a chunk of my brown hair when he hauled me off the bathroom floor. The scrape on Liam’s tiny swaddle where Rosalyn had tossed him onto the bed like a discarded blanket.
"The baby is completely healthy, Hannah," the pediatrician reassured me, gently wrapping Liam back into a clean hospital blanket. "No internal injuries, no trauma. He was scared, but he's safe. You protected him."
Tears finally spilled over my swollen cheek. I held Liam so close I could feel his heartbeat syncing with mine.
The door opened, and Detective Marcus Hayes from the Domestic Violence Unit walked in holding a legal pad and an evidence bag containing the baby monitor's memory card.
"Hannah, I'm Detective Hayes," he said, pulling up a plastic chair. "I listened to the dispatch audio, and our digital forensics tech pulled the last twenty-four hours of audio from the nursery base station. I need you to know something right away."
"What is it?" I asked, my voice hoarse.
"This wasn't a domestic dispute that escalated," Detective Hayes said gravely. "The recordings from two nights ago show Brandon and Rosalyn discussing a deliberate strategy. They were intentionally depriving you of sleep, moving Liam’s feeding schedule without telling you, and hiding your car keys. Rosalyn is on tape saying they needed to provoke a physical confrontation so they could petition for an emergency guardianship order and declare you unfit."
The room seemed to spin. I grabbed the edge of the hospital bed to steady myself.
"They wanted to steal my baby," I whispered. "From the day I found out I was pregnant, they were planning this."
"It's worse than that," Hayes continued. "Brandon took out an umbrella life insurance policy in your name six weeks ago, naming Rosalyn as the secondary trustee in the event of your death or institutionalization. When they realized you weren't breaking down mentally, they moved to brute force."
The door swung open, and my older sister Chloe rushed in, her eyes red from crying, having driven three hours through the night the moment she got my call.
"Hannah!" Chloe sobbed, throwing her arms around me while carefully avoiding my bruised shoulders. "Oh god, Hannah... look what they did to you."
"Chloe," I choked out, burying my face in her shoulder. "They tried to take him."
"They will never touch either of you again," Chloe promised fiercely. "I don't care how much money the Thorne family has. I sold my car on the drive over here, Hannah. I took out a second mortgage on my house. We are fighting them with everything we have."
Detective Hayes stood up and placed a business card on the bedside table. "Brandon Thorne has been charged with felony domestic battery with strangulation, false imprisonment, and child endangerment. Rosalyn Thorne has been charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and accessory to child endangerment. The magistrate denied Brandon bail tonight. But Rosalyn's bail hearing is tomorrow morning, and her brother is a retired state judge."
"She's going to get out," I said, a pit of dread forming in my stomach.
"She might," Hayes admitted honestly. "Which is why you cannot go back to that house. Not even with an escort. We are putting an emergency protective order in place, but you need to disappear for a while until the preliminary hearing."

I looked down at Liam, who was sleeping peacefully in my arms, entirely unaware of the war that had just begun over his life.
"I won't hide forever," I said, my voice hardening into steel. "I'm going to take everything they have."
