Chapter 13 - The Verdict, The Breakdown, And The Maximum Sentences Handed Down

The jury deliberated for less than three hours.

When the courtroom reconvened, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Judge Arthur Vance ordered the defendants to rise and face the jury.

The jury foreperson, a retired schoolteacher, stood and read the verdict:

"On Count One, Conspiracy to Commit Aggravated Kidnapping and False Imprisonment: Guilty for both defendants."

"On Count Two, Felony Domestic Battery by Strangulation: Guilty for Brandon Thorne."

"On Count Three, Federal Wire Fraud and Grand Larceny: Guilty for both defendants."

"On Count Four, Witness Intimidation and Obstruction of Justice: Guilty for Rosalyn Thorne."

"On Count Five, Racketeering under the Federal RICO Act: Guilty for Rosalyn Thorne."

A collective gasp swept through the gallery, followed by the swift gavel strike of the judge.

Rosalyn collapsed into her chair, burying her face in her hands and sobbing hysterically. Brandon stared at the verdict sheet with blank, lifeless eyes, his jaw hanging open in disbelief.

Judge Arthur Vance did not wait for a separate sentencing hearing. Citing the overwhelming evidence, the extreme violence, and Brandon's prior escape attempt, he moved directly to sentencing.

"Brandon Thorne," Judge Vance said coldly. "You abandoned your duty as a husband and a father to become an instrument of terror against a defenseless woman and your own child. For your crimes, you are sentenced to twenty-eight years at ADX Florence Federal Penitentiary without the possibility of federal parole."

Brandon let out a strangled groan, slumping forward onto the defense desk.

"Rosalyn Thorne," the judge continued, turning his gaze upon the weeping matriarch. "You orchestrated a reign of financial and psychological terror spanning decades. You used your wealth to corrupt justice and destroy families. You are sentenced to thirty-two years at the Federal Correctional Institution in Aliceville, Alabama."

"No! Please! I will die in there!" Rosalyn wailed, thrashing against the marshals as they hauled her up by her arms. "I am seventy-one years old! That is a life sentence!"

"Then you should have considered that before you handed your son the key to that bathroom door," Judge Vance replied without mercy. "Remove them."

The courtroom erupted into applause as the federal marshals dragged Brandon and Rosalyn through the prisoner exit.

It was over. The monsters were locked in cages of their own making.
