Chapter 8 - The Emergency Custody Hearing Where Brandon Thought His Charm Would Save Him

Two weeks later, the family court held an emergency custody hearing to establish permanent temporary custody of Liam pending the criminal trial.

Brandon was brought into the courtroom in bright orange prison scrubs, his hands shackled to a chain around his waist. Despite the chains, he had spent the morning combing his hair and trying to maintain his charming, sorrowful demeanor for the judge.

His defense attorney, a prominent $1,000-an-hour litigator named Richard Sterling, stood up and addressed Judge Patricia Vance.

"Your Honor," Sterling began smoothly. "My client is a devoted father, a respected professional, and a man who acted under extreme emotional distress during a domestic argument. The charges against him are grossly exaggerated by a spouse seeking an unfair advantage in divorce proceedings. We ask that Mr. Thorne be granted supervised visitation with his newborn son and that joint legal custody be maintained."

Judge Vance looked over her glasses at Sterling, then turned to Evelyn Cross. "Counsel for the petitioner?"

Evelyn stood up, calm and commanding. "Your Honor, we do not have arguments. We have facts. We submit Petitioner's Exhibit A: the unedited dispatch audio and nursery monitor recording from the night of the assault."

Evelyn pressed play on the courtroom media console.

The courtroom fell into dead, breathless silence as Brandon’s voice filled the room, chillingly clear and casual:

“She’s exhausted. That’s the point. If she tries to leave with him, I’ll stop her at the front door. Don’t let her make this about the baby. Once she gives him up, she’ll listen.”

Followed by Rosalyn’s cold laugh: “She’ll cry. Let her. She always gives in when she thinks she’s upsetting everyone.”

Followed by the sound of my screams, the violent thud of my body being slammed against the bathroom floor, and the sickening click of the brass key turning in the lock.

Brandon bowed his head, his hands clenching into fists against the defense table, his face burning a deep, humiliated crimson.

Judge Vance’s expression hardened into pure disgust. She didn't even wait for Evelyn to finish her closing remarks.

"Mr. Sterling," Judge Vance said, her voice sharp as a razor. "In my twenty-two years on the bench, I have rarely heard evidence of such calculated, depraved cruelty toward a new mother and her infant child."

The judge slammed her gavel down with a resounding crack.

"All parental rights and visitation privileges for Brandon Thorne are hereby suspended immediately and indefinitely. A permanent protective order is entered barring Brandon Thorne and Rosalyn Thorne from coming within one thousand feet of Hannah Thorne and Liam Thorne. Full sole physical and legal custody is awarded exclusively to the mother. Mr. Thorne, you will not see that child again until this court decides otherwise—which may very well be never."

Brandon leaped out of his chair, rattling his chains. "You can't do this! That's my son! Hannah, you bitch, tell her! Tell her I love him!"

"Bailiffs, remove the defendant!" Judge Vance ordered.

Two armed deputies grabbed Brandon by the shoulders and dragged him kicking and screaming through the heavy side doors of the courtroom.

I sat beside Evelyn, holding Chloe’s hand, and let out a long, shuddering breath. The first battle was won.
