Chapter 2 - Red Lights In The Driveway And The Lies That Crumbled In Handcuffs

The roar from the staircase froze Brandon where he stood. The bathroom door stopped midway. Through the crack, I saw the blood drain from his face, turning his smug expression into raw panic.
"Brandon!" Rosalyn shrieked from the hallway. "Who is that? Who did you let in?"
"Sheriff's Office! Step out into the hallway with your hands visible right now!" heavy tactical boots stomped up the hardwood stairs, three officers moving in tight formation with weapons drawn and flashlights cutting through the dim upstairs hall.
Brandon immediately dropped the brass key. He raised his hands, his voice morphing back into that smooth, terrified choirboy tone he had perfected since childhood. "Officers, wait! Please! It’s a misunderstanding! My wife is having postpartum psychosis! She’s locked herself in the bathroom with our baby and she’s threatening to hurt him! I was just trying to get the door open to save my son!"
Hearing him say those words sent a surge of pure adrenaline through my veins. He was ready to paint me as an insane mother willing to harm her own flesh and blood just to save his own neck.
"Hannah?" the dispatcher’s voice came through my phone speaker, loud and clear. "Hannah, the deputies are on scene. Officer Miller is outside the door. Do you hear me?"
"I'm here," I screamed, finding my voice from the bottom of my lungs. "I'm in the bathroom! I have Liam! I recorded everything on the monitor! Do not let them touch my son!"
"Step away from that door, sir!" Officer Miller barked. "Hands on your head! Face down on the floor! Now!"
"You don't understand, she's delusional!" Brandon yelled back, but his voice cracked. "Mom, tell them!"
"My son is an executive at Thorne Capital!" Rosalyn began her usual haughty screech. "How dare you point weapons at us in our own home! We are taxpayers! That girl in there has been having manic episodes since she gave birth—"
"Ma'am, sit down on that bench and keep your hands where we can see them, or you will be detained for obstruction!" a female deputy shouted.
A second later, I heard the dull thud of Brandon being forced down onto the carpet, followed by the metallic click of handcuffs snapping tight around his wrists.
"Deputy Sarah Vance, Hannah," a gentle, firm voice called from the open bathroom door. "It's safe to look up. We're here."
I raised my head slowly. Deputy Vance stepped into the bathroom, holstering her weapon, her eyes immediately taking in the scene: the swelling on my left cheekbone, the bloody split on my bottom lip, the dark red handprints visible on my collarbone, and my baby boy tucked safely against my chest.
"Let's get you and Liam out of here," Deputy Vance said softly, extending a steady hand to help me stand.
As she escorted me out into the hallway, I saw Brandon pinned to the floor by two male deputies. His cheek was mashed into the carpet, his designer shirt ripped at the seam. When his eyes met mine, the mask of sanity slipped entirely. His eyes burned with venomous hatred.
"You ruined everything, Hannah!" he spat, spraying saliva onto the floor. "You think you can take my son from me? You don't have a penny! You don't have a family! My mother’s lawyers will leave you on the street without a dime!"
Rosalyn was sitting on the wooden hallway bench, her tailored knit cardigan disheveled, her manicured fingers trembling with fury. "You ungrateful little stray," she hissed under her breath as I walked past. "We took you in. We gave you a life. And you call the police on your own husband? You’ll regret this until the day you die."

"Keep moving, ma'am," Deputy Vance told me, shielding my body as we walked down the grand mahogany staircase of the estate Brandon had bragged about owning.
Outside, the driveway was bathed in pulsing red and blue emergency lights. Two ambulances sat with their back doors wide open. Cold night air hit my bruised face, stinging my split lip, but for the first time in nine months, the air entering my lungs felt completely clean.
