Chapter 9 - The Eviction from the Penthouse and the Public Breakdown

While Ryan and Vanessa spent forty-eight hours in federal holding before Ryan’s estranged mother’s distant relatives scraped together enough collateral for his bail, the cleanup of the Bennett estate proceeded with surgical precision.
Under my leadership as the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer and Harold’s mentorship as Chairman Emeritus, Bennett Distribution Logistics moved swiftly to cut all ties with the toxic remnants of Ryan’s tenure.
On Friday morning, accompanied by a court-appointed bailiff and a commercial moving crew, I arrived at the luxury downtown penthouse to oversee the asset repossession.
The penthouse, along with the high-performance Porsche 911 GT3 parked in the underground garage, had been purchased directly with funds laundered from Bennett Distribution’s operational reserves. By order of the federal bankruptcy trustee, all assets were to be liquidated immediately to restore the company’s balance sheets and protect the children's trust fund.
As the moving crew began tagging luxury furniture for public auction, the elevator doors chimed.
Ryan walked out into the corridor. He was wearing a cheap gray hoodie, dark sweatpants, and had several days of unkempt stubble across his face. He looked ten years older, completely broken and hollowed out.
When he saw me standing in the foyer holding an inventory clipboard, his eyes flared with wild, impotent rage.
"Claire!" he shouted, rushing past the building concierge. "What are you doing here?! You have no right to touch my things!"
"These aren't your things, Ryan," I answered calmly, not flinching as he approached. "These items were purchased with stolen company revenue. The court has placed everything under receivership."
"My clothes! My watches! My car!" Ryan screamed, waving his arms frantically. "You’re stripping me of everything I own! How am I supposed to live?! I don't have a job! I don't have an apartment! My bank accounts are frozen!"
"You should have thought about that before you promised your mistress you would bury your father and kick your children out of their home," I said, my voice steady as steel.
Several residents of the luxury building gathered near the elevator lobby, pulling out their phones to record the disgraced former heir having a full public meltdown.
"You took my kids away from me!" Ryan sobbed, dropping to his knees on the hallway carpet. "Emily won't answer my calls! Noah hung up on me! Claire, please... you can't do this to me. I’m their father!"
"A father protects his children’s future, Ryan," I replied, looking down at him with profound sorrow, but not an ounce of regret. "You were willing to leave them with a bankrupt company and a broken family just to feed your own ego. Emily and Noah know the truth. And until you take full accountability for what you've done, they will remain protected from your toxicity."
The bailiff stepped forward, handing Ryan a small duffel bag containing only his basic clothing and personal hygiene items.

"Mr. Bennett, you have five minutes to vacate the building before you are charged with criminal trespassing," the bailiff stated firmly.
Ryan clutched the cheap duffel bag to his chest, looked at the crowd of onlookers filming his ultimate disgrace, and slowly dragged himself toward the service stairs, utterly alone in the city he once thought he would rule.
