Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush and the Mistress's Golden Dream

By Monday morning at nine o'clock, the executive floor of Bennett Distribution Logistics was buzzing with electric tension.

Rumors traveled fast in a corporate tower with five hundred employees. Word had already leaked that Ryan Bennett had not been seen in his corner office on Friday, yet at precisely 9:15 AM, the elevator doors slid open to reveal Ryan, looking impeccably tailored in a charcoal Tom Ford suit. Flanking him on his left was Vanessa Cole, dressed in an eye-catching designer red dress, clutching an alligator-skin handbag that had cost more than an average family’s monthly mortgage.

Vanessa carried herself with the smug, untouchable strut of a woman who believed she was about to be crowned queen of the mountain. She smirked at the receptionists, ignoring the quiet whispers that swept across the cubicles.

"Call an emergency executive board meeting in Conference Room A immediately," Ryan barked at his executive assistant, Marcus. "And tell legal to have the proxy voting sheets ready."

"Mr. Bennett..." Marcus stammered, his eyes darting nervously toward the large double doors at the end of the hallway. "The board is already in session."

"Without me?" Ryan sneered, adjusting his gold cufflinks. "Perfect. Saves me the trouble of rounding up the old fossils."

Ryan turned to Vanessa, flashing a confident grin. "Watch how quickly they fold. My dad is too sick to leave his hospice bed. Once I show the board our new logistics expansion plan, they’ll name me interim Chairman before noon."

"Make sure you fire Claire by lunch," Vanessa whispered playfully, leaning in to adjust his tie. "I want her desk cleared out before I move into the north suite."

Ryan pushed open the frosted glass doors of Conference Room A with dramatic flair. "Good morning, gentlemen. I apologize for the delay, but we have urgent matters regarding executive leadership to address—"

Ryan’s voice abruptly caught in his throat.

Sitting at the head of the forty-foot Brazilian walnut conference table was Harold Bennett. He looked healthier than he had in months, flanked by our chief legal counsel, Arthur Vance, and three forensic accountants.

Sitting directly to Harold’s right, dressed in a sharp navy blazer with a pristine white silk shirt, was me.

Every single member of the board of directors—men and women who had known Harold Bennett for forty years—sat in stony silence, their eyes fixed on Ryan.

"Ryan," Harold said calmly, resting his folded hands on a thick stack of audited balance sheets. "How kind of you to join us. And I see you’ve brought Ms. Cole from marketing. How convenient."

Vanessa’s smug smile instantly evaporated. She instinctively took a half-step back toward the door, clutching her purse against her ribs.

"Dad?" Ryan choked out, trying desperately to regain his footing. "What is this? Why wasn't I informed of a shareholder meeting? Claire has no business sitting in the executive chair!"

"Actually, Ryan," Arthur Vance spoke up, adjusting his half-moon reading glasses. "Mrs. Claire Bennett holds full operational authority as of seven o'clock this morning. Mr. Harold Bennett has exercised his founder's rights to transfer seventy percent of his active voting shares into an executive revocable trust under Claire’s sole management."

"That’s illegal!" Ryan shouted, slamming his palm against the back of an empty leather chair. "My father is undergoing intense chemotherapy! He is not in a sound legal state to reallocate corporate equity without board approval! I am the Vice President! I will file an injunction!"

"You were the Vice President, Ryan," I said calmly, looking him directly in the eyes. "Until our internal audit revealed what you and Ms. Cole have been doing with the company’s corporate reserve accounts over the last fourteen months."

I slid a stack of detailed bank statements down the long table toward the board members.

"Over the past year," I continued, projecting my voice with undeniable authority, "Ryan Bennett authorized four point two million dollars in 'marketing consulting fees' paid directly to a shell LLC registered under the name of Vanessa Cole’s younger brother in Delaware. Another eight hundred thousand was funneled through offshore accounts in Grand Cayman to purchase a luxury penthouse in downtown Denver under a blind trust."

The room erupted into gasps. Board members leaned forward, frantically flipping through the forensic transaction logs.

Vanessa gasped, her face draining of all color. "Ryan... you said those accounts were untraceable!"

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Ryan roared, sweat breaking out across his forehead. He turned back to the board, his voice cracking with desperation. "This is a setup! Claire cooked these books to steal my rightful inheritance! Harold, you can't believe this garbage!"

Harold slowly picked up his gavel—the ceremonial wooden mallet from the day Bennett Distribution went public twenty years ago.

"Ryan," Harold said, his voice ringing with absolute finality. "For thirty-five years, I built this enterprise on integrity, honesty, and family. You brought theft, deceit, and treason into these halls. The board has unanimously voted to terminate your employment effective immediately, alongside Ms. Cole."

Harold struck the wooden block with a loud, resounding crack.

"Security has already escorted two detectives from the Denver District Attorney’s Financial Crimes Division to the lobby," Harold added, looking down at his son with utter disdain. "You have ten minutes to clear your personal belongings before you are escorted from the building in handcuffs."
