Chapter 6 - Desperation at Midnight and the Stolen Medical Records

The humiliation at the Brown Palace Gala went viral across Denver business circles within twelve hours. Video clips of Ryan’s black cards being declined and his undignified removal from the ballroom were shared across LinkedIn, local news channels, and social media.

Cornered, penniless, and facing impending criminal indictments, Ryan turned to the only weapon he had left: psychological warfare and legal fabrication.

At two in the morning on Tuesday, while the children were asleep, the security alarm on Harold’s Cherry Creek property sounded.

Harold’s private security guards immediately intercepted an intruder attempting to break through the French doors leading into the ground-floor study. When the floodlights snapped on, they found Dr. Julian Ross—a corrupt private physician who had previously lost his medical license in California before moving to Colorado as an "alternative wellness consultant."

Tucked inside Dr. Ross’s leather briefcase were Harold’s private oncology files, stolen from the regional cancer clinic, alongside a pre-drafted emergency conservatorship petition stamped by an unscrupulous probate attorney.

I arrived at Harold’s estate twenty minutes later, accompanied by Arthur Vance and the local police captain.

Dr. Ross was sitting in the back of a squad car in handcuffs, while Harold sat in his study, calm and collected, drinking hot tea while the police dusted the doorframe for prints.

"What did they intend to do with these records, Arthur?" I asked, looking at the forged documents spread across the desk.

"Ryan paid Dr. Ross fifty thousand dollars to alter Harold’s neurological evaluations," Arthur explained, pointing to a falsified psychiatric assessment. "This document claims that Harold’s lymphoma has metastasized to his brain, causing acute vascular dementia and severe paranoid delusions. Ryan was planning to file an emergency ex parte petition at nine o'clock tomorrow morning to strip Harold of all civil and financial rights, appointing Ryan as his sole legal guardian."

I felt a cold shiver run down my spine. "If a judge had signed off on that emergency order without Harold present, Ryan would have regained immediate control of the trust, dissolved the board, and dropped the criminal investigation against himself."

"Precisely," Arthur agreed. "It is a ruthless, scorched-earth tactic. But Ryan made one fatal calculation."

"What’s that?"

Arthur smiled faintly, glancing at Harold. "He assumed Harold’s medical reality matched the lies he was spreading."

Harold set his teacup down and looked up at me, a glimmer of triumphant joy dancing in his eyes for the first time in years.

"Claire, sweetheart," Harold said softly. "I haven't told you the results of my PET scan from last Friday."

I held my breath. "Harold... what did the doctors say?"

"The experimental immunotherapy protocol we started four months ago at the University of Colorado Cancer Center didn't just slow down the lymphoma," Harold said, his voice thick with emotion. "As of last week, the tumors in my lymph nodes have completely vanished. I am in full, biochemical remission."

Tears sprang instantly to my eyes. I dropped to my knees beside his chair, wrapping my arms around the old man’s shoulders as relief washed over me like a tidal wave. "Oh, thank God... Harold, thank God!"

"I kept the official clinical report sealed under court privilege until the conservatorship hearing," Harold chuckled softly, patting my back. "Ryan thinks he is walking into probate court tomorrow to bury a dying, confused old man. He has no idea he is walking into his own execution."
