Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Signature and the Missing Five Million

The chaos that followed the boardroom revelation was swift and unforgiving.
Vanessa Cole didn't even wait for Ryan to respond. The moment she heard the words District Attorney, she spun on her high heels and practically sprinted down the hallway toward the elevators, leaving Ryan standing alone in the center of the boardroom like a shipwreck survivor watching his lifeboat burn.
"You won't get away with this, Claire!" Ryan snarled, his voice trembling with manic fury as security guards stepped into the room. "I will hire the best litigators in the country! I will drag your name through the mud in every newspaper in Colorado!"
"You're welcome to try, Ryan," Arthur Vance remarked coolly. "Assuming you can find an attorney willing to represent you without a retainer, considering your personal liquid assets have just been frozen under a temporary court injunction."
As security escorted Ryan out of the corporate headquarters, Harold slumped slightly in his chair, taking a deep, ragged breath. I immediately rushed to his side, handing him a glass of water and his medication.
"Are you alright, Harold?" I asked, genuine concern lacing my voice.
"I am fine, Claire," he whispered, patting my hand with a trembling grip. "Just tired. Tired of realizing that the boy I raised had become a stranger. But we cannot rest yet. The five million dollars he embezzled isn't the worst of it."
Two hours later, Arthur Vance, Harold, and I convened in Harold’s private office on the top floor. Spread across the desk were several real estate deeds and corporate guarantees dated over the last six months.
"What is this, Arthur?" I asked, scanning the complex legal jargon on the top page.
"Three months ago, while Harold was hospitalized in intensive care following his second round of radiation," Arthur explained grimly, "Ryan attempted to secure a twenty-million-dollar leveraged buyout loan using Bennett Distribution’s primary distribution hubs as collateral. He forged Harold’s signature on a corporate guarantee."
My heart stopped. "A twenty-million-dollar loan? For what?"
"To fund a private equity venture called 'Apex Logistics Holdings'—a front company managed by Ryan and Vanessa’s associates," Arthur revealed. "Ryan’s plan was simple: if Harold died, the debt would collapse onto Bennett Distribution, driving the family firm into forced bankruptcy. Ryan would then use the embezzled five million to buy back the distressed assets at auction for pennies on the dollar through Apex Holdings. He wasn't just waiting for Harold to die, Claire. He was actively setting up the company to be cannibalized."
Harold closed his eyes, his knuckles turning white against his cane. "He wanted to destroy everything I built just to prove he was smarter than me."
"We intercepted the loan before the final funds were disbursed," Arthur continued. "The bank flagged irregularities in Harold’s signature last week, which is what originally triggered the forensic audit. But the signature Ryan submitted wasn't just a poor tracing. He used an electronic signature pad registered to Harold's home computer."
I covered my mouth in shock. "The night Ryan claimed he was staying late at Harold’s house to manage his medication..."
"He was sitting in my study, accessing my secure personal server while I was asleep upstairs," Harold said, his voice heavy with a father's profound heartbreak. "He stole my digital credentials."
"This is grand larceny, wire fraud, and identity theft," I stated, the gravity of the situation crashing down upon me. "Harold, if we hand these files over to the FBI, Ryan is facing ten to twenty years in federal prison."
Harold was silent for a long moment. He looked out the towering window overlooking the majestic Rocky Mountains, the sunlight catching the silver in his hair.
"Let the law take its course, Claire," Harold said softly, turning to face me. "I spent sixteen years trying to shield him from the consequences of his arrogance. If I protect him now, I am merely enabling a monster. Emily and Noah deserve to inherit a name built on justice, not corruption."

At that exact moment, my phone buzzed with an incoming text from an unknown number. I opened it to find a message from Ryan:
"You think you've won, Claire? Check the local society columns tonight. I still have friends in this town who know who really holds the power. You will beg me for mercy before this week is over."
