Chapter 5 - The Grand Gala Humiliation and the Frozen Credit Cards

Every year, the Denver Children's Hospital Foundation hosted its prestigious Annual Autumn Gala at the Brown Palace Hotel. It was the premier high-society event of the season, attended by governors, titans of industry, and the city’s elite.

For the past five years, Bennett Distribution Logistics had been the diamond sponsor, with Ryan and me seated at Table One.

Ryan, convinced that his public image could shield him from his corporate downfall, decided that the gala would be his grand counteroffensive. He had spent the last forty-eight hours calling friendly journalists and high-society influencers, peddling a fabricated story that his father was suffering from cognitive decline and that Claire Bennett was an opportunist attempting a hostile corporate takeover.

At 7:30 PM on Saturday evening, the grand ballroom of the Brown Palace was alive with glittering chandeliers, live orchestral music, and crystal champagne flutes.

The double doors swung open, and Ryan strode in, wearing a bespoke midnight-blue velvet tuxedo. Clinging tightly to his arm was Vanessa Cole, wearing an ostentatious emerald backless gown and dripping in diamond jewelry. Ryan walked into the room with his chest puffed out, waving to local politicians and banking executives, determined to project an aura of absolute wealth and untouchable dominance.

"See?" Ryan whispered into Vanessa’s ear with a cocky grin. "Perception is reality. Once everyone sees us here as the face of Bennett Distribution, the banks will back my lawsuit against Claire."

Vanessa beamed, raising her chin high. "Let’s bid on the charity auction trip to Monaco. That will show everyone who’s really in control."

At that moment, the room suddenly hushed.

Walking down the grand marble staircase on the arm of Arthur Vance was me. I wore an elegant, floor-length midnight-black gown with a simple pearl necklace that had belonged to Harold’s late wife, Margaret. I looked poised, serene, and utterly unbothered. Behind me walked three of the city’s most respected hospital board members.

Ryan’s eyes narrowed in disgust. He grabbed two glasses of vintage champagne from a passing waiter and marched straight toward me, loud enough to draw the attention of the surrounding circle of donors.

"Well, well, Claire," Ryan proclaimed with theatrical amusement. "I see you managed to find an invitation. It’s sweet of you to play the role of the devoted executive, but everyone here knows the Bennett name belongs to me. You’re just a temporary caretaker."

Several patrons stopped their conversations, glancing awkwardly between us.

"Ryan," I said calmly, taking a sip of sparkling water. "I suggest you enjoy the appetizers and leave quietly. This is a charity event for sick children, not a stage for your delusions."

"Delusions?" Ryan laughed loudly. "I am Harold Bennett’s only son! I am the future of this city's logistics network! In fact, to prove our commitment to the hospital, Ms. Cole and I would like to pledge a personal donation of five hundred thousand dollars tonight to the pediatric oncology wing!"

A ripple of applause broke out among some unaware guests. Vanessa smirked triumphantly at me, tossing her hair over her shoulder.

The master of ceremonies, holding a wireless credit terminal used for immediate high-tier donor verification, walked over with a broad smile. "Mr. Bennett, that is an extraordinary gift! If you would just swipe your primary donor card to authorize the pledge hold, we can announce it from the podium."

"With pleasure," Ryan said smugly, pulling out his sleek, titanium Centurion card—the primary black card tied to his executive trust.

The MC inserted the card into the portable reader.

A sharp, high-pitched beep echoed across the quiet circle.

TRANSACTION DECLINED: ACCOUNT FROZEN BY COURT ORDER.

Ryan frowned. "That’s impossible. Try it again. The reader must have glitched."

The MC swiped it a second time.

TRANSACTION DECLINED: INSUFFICIENT AUTHORIZATION.

Whispers began to ripple through the crowd like wildfire.

Vanessa’s smile froze. "Ryan... what’s happening?"

"Give me that!" Ryan snapped, snatching his platinum Visa from his wallet and jamming it into the machine.

TRANSACTION DECLINED: FRAUD ALERT.

"Mr. Bennett," the hotel’s head of security stepped forward from the periphery, accompanied by two uniformed police officers. "I’m terribly sorry, but we received official notice this afternoon from the Bennett Family Trust. All corporate-linked credit facilities have been suspended pending active litigation. Furthermore, your guest ticket has been formally revoked by the primary table host, Mrs. Claire Bennett."

Ryan’s face turned an alarming shade of crimson. "Do you know who I am?! I am Ryan Bennett! Claire, tell them to stop this right now!"

"You made your choice, Ryan," I said softly, my voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. "You wanted to live a life of luxury built on stolen money and your father’s suffering. Now you get to experience the reality of standing on your own two feet."

"This is harassment!" Vanessa screeched, backing away as guests began pulling out their smartphones to record the spectacle. "Ryan, do something! This is humiliating!"

"Please escort Mr. Bennett and his guest off the premises," Arthur Vance instructed the security detail calmly.

As the security guards took Ryan by his elbows and guided him toward the side exit amidst the flashing cameras of local social reporters, Ryan turned back, his face twisted in absolute madness.

"I will ruin you, Claire!" he screamed into the crowded room. "I will take my father to court, I will have him declared legally insane, and you will end up with nothing!"
