Chapter 7 - The Master Doctor's Secret and the Miraculous Remission

The following morning at 10:00 AM, Courtroom 4B of the Denver Probate and Family Court was packed to capacity.

Ryan Bennett sat at the petitioner’s table, looking exhausted and disheveled, wearing a suit that was visibly wrinkled. His high-priced litigator, Marcus Sterling—a man known for handling aggressive celebrity divorces—sat beside him, shuffling a massive stack of emergency filings.

On the other side of the aisle sat Arthur Vance, Harold Bennett, and me.

Judge Eleanor Hayes, a no-nonsense jurist with thirty years on the bench, adjusted her spectacles and glared down from the podium.

"Mr. Sterling," Judge Hayes began sharply. "You have filed an emergency ex parte motion requesting the immediate suspension of Mr. Harold Bennett’s legal capacity, alleging severe cognitive impairment and requesting full conservatorship for your client, Ryan Bennett. This is an extraordinary measure. You have fifteen minutes to present your prima facie evidence."

Marcus Sterling stood up, projecting an air of grave concern. "Your Honor, this is a tragic case of elder exploitation. Mr. Harold Bennett is suffering from end-stage lymphoma. Under the duress of his illness, his daughter-in-law, Claire Bennett, has exerted undue influence, isolating him from his only biological son and manipulating him into signing over a forty-million-dollar corporate entity. We have medical affidavits proving Mr. Bennett lacks the testamentary capacity to manage his affairs."

"And who provided these affidavits, counselor?" Judge Hayes asked.

"Dr. Julian Ross, a renowned medical specialist," Sterling declared confidently.

Arthur Vance slowly rose to his feet. "Your Honor, if it please the court, we would like to submit a preliminary rebuttal. Dr. Julian Ross is currently being processed at the Denver County Detention Center for criminal burglary and falsification of medical records."

Sterling blinked in astonishment. Ryan’s jaw dropped.

"Furthermore," Arthur continued, gesturing toward the back doors of the courtroom, "we would like to call Mr. Harold Bennett’s actual primary oncologist and head of hematologic oncology at the University of Colorado, Dr. Robert Sterling-Vance."

The doors swung open, and Dr. Robert Sterling-Vance—a world-renowned, board-certified physician—stepped forward, carrying a sealed medical dossier bearing the official seal of the state medical board.

Dr. Sterling-Vance took the stand, was sworn in, and addressed the court with crisp, clinical precision.

"Your Honor, I have personally supervised Harold Bennett’s medical treatment for the past fourteen months. Three weeks ago, Mr. Bennett completed a course of targeted CAR-T cell immunotherapy. We conducted full-body PET scans and extensive neuro-cognitive testing last Friday."

Dr. Sterling-Vance turned toward the judge, handing over the authenticated clinical reports.

"Mr. Harold Bennett’s cognitive faculties are in the top ninety-ninth percentile for men of his age. His decision-making capacity is pristine. And most importantly, Your Honor, as of seven days ago, Mr. Bennett exhibits zero detectable cancer cells in his body. He is in complete, confirmed remission."

A collective gasp swept through the gallery.

Ryan jumped up from his chair, knocking his legal pad to the floor. "That’s a lie! He was dying! He was coughing up blood in August! This is a medical conspiracy to rob me of my inheritance!"

"Mr. Bennett, sit down immediately or I will have the bailiff hold you in contempt!" Judge Hayes slammed her gavel down with thunderous fury.

Judge Hayes reviewed the medical records for several minutes, her expression hardening into stone. She looked up and locked her gaze directly onto Ryan.

"Mr. Ryan Bennett," Judge Hayes spoke with chilling authority. "Not only is this emergency petition denied with prejudice, but based on the evidence presented by the Denver District Attorney’s office regarding forged digital signatures and medical records theft, this court is referring your filings to the state Attorney General for immediate criminal prosecution. Furthermore, the temporary restraining order protecting Harold Bennett, Claire Bennett, and their children from your presence is hereby made permanent."

Ryan collapsed back into his chair, burying his face in his trembling hands as the reality of his total destruction finally crashed down upon him.
