Chapter 8 - The Gold Digger's Exit Strategy

When the ship begins to sink, the rats are always the first to jump overboard.
Vanessa Cole was nothing if not a ruthless opportunist. The moment news of the probate court disaster and the unsealed criminal indictments hit the local press, Vanessa realized that Ryan Bennett was no longer a golden ticket to a forty-million-dollar fortune—he was a radioactive anchor pulling her straight into a federal penitentiary.
That evening, Vanessa returned to the luxury penthouse in downtown Denver that Ryan had leased for her using embezzled company funds. Her objective was simple: pack every designer dress, luxury watch, diamond necklace, and high-end art piece she could cram into four Louis Vuitton trunks and catch the red-eye flight to Miami before the FBI froze her personal accounts.
As she zipped up the final suitcase in the penthouse bedroom, the front door clicked open.
Ryan walked in, looking like a ghost. His tie was undone, his eyes bloodshot, clutching a half-empty bottle of bourbon.
"Vanessa?" Ryan called out, his voice slurred and desperate. "Thank God you’re here... My lawyer dropped me. He said the DA is issuing arrest warrants tomorrow morning. We need to take your car and drive up to Canada. We can use the cash in your brother’s Delaware LLC—"
Ryan stopped dead in his tracks as he entered the bedroom and saw the packed luggage lining the floor.
Vanessa didn't even look up as she slipped a five-carat diamond tennis bracelet onto her wrist.
"What is this?" Ryan asked, his voice cracking with disbelief. "You’re packing? Vanessa, where are we going?"
"Not we, Ryan," Vanessa said coldly, snapping her alligator handbag shut. "I am leaving."
Ryan blinked, struggling to process the words. "What are you talking about? We're in this together! I gave up my marriage for you! I stole five million dollars from my family’s firm so you could have the life you wanted!"
Vanessa let out a cruel, mocking laugh that cut deeper than any dagger.
"You stole that money because you're a weak, pathetic little boy who wanted to pretend he was a big man," Vanessa sneered, stepping past him toward the hallway. "You didn't give up your marriage for me, Ryan. You gave it up because you’re a narcissist who couldn't stand that your wife was smarter than you and your father saw right through you."
Ryan grabbed her wrist, his face twisting in rage. "You used me! You told me you loved me! You promised we would run Bennett Distribution together!"
"I loved forty million dollars, Ryan!" Vanessa screamed, yanking her arm free with violent force. "I loved the idea of private jets and corporate yachts! But you aren't an heir anymore. You’re a broke, unemployed felon facing ten years in prison. You have nothing left. And I don't waste my time on garbage."
Vanessa turned toward the door, only to find two uniformed Denver police officers and two plainclothes FBI agents standing in the open doorway.
"Vanessa Cole?" Special Agent Miller asked, holding up his federal credentials.
Vanessa froze, the color draining from her face. "Yes?"

"You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering, and interstate transport of stolen property," Agent Miller stated, stepping forward with handcuffs. "And Mr. Ryan Bennett... you might as well put your hands behind your back too. You’re coming with us."
As the steel cuffs clicked around Vanessa’s manicured wrists, she burst into hysterical sobs, screaming insults at Ryan, while Ryan stood paralyzed, watching the glamorous fantasy he had destroyed his entire life for dissolve into cold iron bars.
