Chapter 9 - The Bank Freeze and the Blacklisted Accounts

By 8:00 AM on Monday morning, the financial guillotine dropped on Julian Vance.

Julian woke up in a cheap, $120-a-night airport motel on the outskirts of the city, having spent the night arguing with Evelyn over who was to blame for their eviction.

He dressed in his remaining wrinkled suit, drove to the downtown branch of First Heritage Bank, and attempted to withdraw $50,000 from his secondary executive account to hire a criminal defense attorney.

He walked up to the teller desk, sliding his platinum corporate debit card across the counter.

“I need a cashier’s check for fifty thousand dollars drawn against Vance & Sterling Executive Operations,” Julian said smoothly, trying to maintain his old executive swagger.

The teller swiped the card. A loud, flashing red error alert popped up across her terminal.

The branch manager, Mr. Henderson, walked over to the desk with an expression of cold, unblinking granite.

“Mr. Vance,” Henderson said quietly. “All corporate accounts, credit lines, and joint checking facilities associated with your name have been placed under administrative freeze pursuant to a federal civil seizure warrant.”

Julian slammed his hand onto the counter. “That’s outrageous! I am an executive director at the firm! That account holds my quarterly bonuses!”

“You were terminated for cause at 6:00 AM this morning by unanimous resolution of the Board of Directors, Mr. Vance,” Henderson replied, sliding a certified corporate notification across the counter. “Your company credit cards are canceled. Your personal accounts have been attached under an emergency $1.4 million civil restitution lien. You have a zero-dollar balance.”

Julian stumbled backward, his face turning an ashen shade of gray.

When he walked out to the parking lot, his leased Mercedes-Benz was sitting on the back of a commercial flatbed tow truck—repossessed by the corporate fleet management division.

Julian stood on the pavement in the cold Chicago wind, clutching his leather briefcase, completely broke, carless, and ruined.
