Chapter 5 - Forensic Audits and Embezzled Blueprints

By 4:00 PM, a team of eight forensic IT specialists and private corporate investigators had sealed Julian and Evelyn’s offices on the 36th floor.

While the data extraction team cloned their hard drives and decrypted their private communication channels, Arthur Vance and I sat in my private corner office reviewing the preliminary findings.

What we discovered went far beyond basic corporate embezzlement.

Three weeks ago, Julian and Evelyn had negotiated a covert licensing agreement with Apex Development Consortium—our firm’s primary corporate rival in the Midwest.

Julian had stolen the master CAD blueprints for my patented, eco-sustainable commercial high-rise design—the very architectural innovation that had won our firm the $80 million Riverfront Tower contract with the City of Chicago.

Julian had planned to resign from Vance & Sterling next month, join Apex Development as their new Senior Vice President, and bring my stolen architectural patents with him as his personal equity contribution.

Attached to the email thread was a message Julian had sent to the CEO of Apex on Wednesday night:

“Once the family court grants my sole conservatorship over Clara’s estate due to her abandonment, I will have legal power of attorney to sign over the municipal patent rights without her consent. We launch Riverfront Tower under Apex branding on March 1st.”

Arthur Vance shook his head in absolute disgust. “This is industrial espionage, interstate wire fraud, and grand larceny, Clara. If we take this to the United States Attorney, Julian and Evelyn are looking at ten to fifteen years in federal prison.”

“We will take it to the United States Attorney, Arthur,” I said, sipping my espresso. “But not before I reclaim my son.”

My phone buzzed on the desk.

It was Dr. Miriam Vance, the city’s top court-appointed child psychologist and an old family friend.

“Clara,” Dr. Vance said, her voice filled with professional urgency. “I just reviewed the emergency custody petition filed by Julian’s lawyer. I also spoke with Leo’s private school principal. We have an immediate legal opening to intervene.”
