Chapter 11 - The Annulment of Fraud in Family Court

Two months later, the Cook County Family Court held an emergency evidentiary hearing to finalize the dissolution of our marriage.

The courtroom was packed with regional media and architectural colleagues.

I sat at the petitioner’s table alongside Arthur Vance and Dr. Miriam Vance. Across the aisle, Julian sat in orange prison jumpsuits and heavy waist chains, flanked by a court-appointed public defender after every private attorney in the city refused his case.

Judge William Thornton reviewed the clinical child psychology reports, the forensic audio admissions, and the corporate embezzlement findings.

“In twelve years on this bench,” Judge Thornton declared, his voice ringing with profound moral condemnation, “I have rarely witnessed a display of parental betrayal and calculated greed as malicious as the conduct of the respondent, Julian Vance.”

Judge Thornton brought his heavy gavel down onto the oak sound block.

“The court hereby awards Sole Legal and Sole Physical Custody of the minor child, Leo Vance, to Clara Vance, with zero visitation privileges awarded to the respondent. Furthermore, the court declares the marital property agreement entirely void due to intentional fraud in the inducement. Mr. Vance is ordered to pay $1.4 million in full civil restitution to the petitioner.”

Julian slumped over the defense table, weeping silently into his cuffed hands as the bailiffs hoisted him up and marched him out of the courtroom to await his federal criminal sentencing.
