Chapter 8 - Evelyn's Fake Pedigree and Dark Past

While Julian and Evelyn were being escorted to the curb with their suitcases, our private corporate investigation team struck gold.
Sitting in the executive lounge of the Drake Hotel, our lead investigator, Thomas Cole, laid a thick dossier across my glass coffee table.
“Clara, your former marketing director is a serial fraudster,” Cole revealed, clicking through a digital timeline on his tablet.
“Her real name isn't Evelyn Cross,” Cole explained. “It’s Evelyn Kowalski. Five years ago in Atlanta, she was indicted for running a fraudulent kickback scheme inside a commercial design firm, embezzling $600,000 from municipal school board projects.”
“How did she get past our HR screening?” I asked, my eyes scanning the arrest records.
“She forged her architectural marketing certifications, altered her Social Security records through a Delaware shell entity, and used fabricated recommendation letters bearing the forged signatures of deceased corporate executives,” Cole said. “Julian knew about her past. In fact, he used her Delaware shell company specifically to launder the $1.4 million in stolen firm retainers.”
I closed the folder.
“And the stolen patent blueprints for the Riverfront Tower?”

“The CEO of Apex Development, Richard Sterling, just received a formal cease-and-desist letter from Arthur Vance,” Cole smiled. “When Sterling realized Julian had handed him stolen intellectual property subject to federal prosecution, Apex immediately terminated all negotiations, fired their outside legal counsel, and turned over Julian’s private email admissions directly to the United States Attorney.”
Julian’s grand corporate alliance had disintegrated before it even launched.
