Chapter 12 - The Public Humiliation at the Civic Architecture Gala

In April, the annual Midwest Civic Architecture and Urban Design Gala was held at the Grand Ballroom of the Palmer House Hotel.
It was the most prestigious gathering of the year, attended by the Governor, the Mayor of Chicago, international developers, and civic leaders.
Before his arrest, Julian had bragged to the entire architectural community that he would be accepting the Project of the Decade Award for the Riverfront Tower development on behalf of Apex Consortium.
Tonight, the spotlight belonged entirely to the truth.
At 8:30 PM, the Mayor of Chicago took the grand stage before eight hundred distinguished guests.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” the Mayor announced into the microphone. “Tonight, we honor an visionary leader whose brilliant engineering, unyielding integrity, and dedication to our city has set a new global benchmark for sustainable architecture. Presenting the Grand Civic Landmark Award to the Chairwoman and Chief Executive Officer of Vance & Sterling Design... Clara Vance!”
A thunderous, standing ovation erupted across the ballroom as the crystal chandeliers glittered above.
I walked gracefully up the grand carpeted stairs to the stage, wearing an elegant emerald-green silk evening gown—with my grandmother’s antique emerald pendant resting proudly against my collarbone.
Beside the stage sat Leo, wearing his first tailored suit, clapping his hands with radiant, unstoppable pride.

I took the golden trophy into my hands, looking out across the sea of cheering, smiling faces.
“True architecture is not about building glass towers to flatter an ego,” I said into the microphone, my voice clear, resonant, and strong. “True architecture is about building unshakeable foundations—foundations rooted in truth, loyalty, and love that no storm can ever tear down.”
