Chapter 9 - The Web of Forged Signatures

Within forty-eight hours of the arrests, the full scale of the Miller family’s criminal conspiracy was laid bare.

Captain Marcus Ramirez and a forensic accounting team spent two sleepless days tearing through Ryan’s financial footprint. In Ryan’s Escalade, the police recovered the leather folder containing the fraudulent deed transfer.

The document attempted to convey fifty percent of the residential property and one hundred percent of the commercial annex to "Ashley’s Velvet Touch LLC" for the nominal sum of ten dollars. Attached was a forged signature of Major Hannah Vance, complete with a counterfeit military notary seal obtained from a crooked notary in South Beach.

"They were planning to execute this at the county clerk's office on Tuesday morning," Captain Ramirez explained, laying out the documents across the conference table at his law office. "Once the deed was recorded, Ashley was going to take out a $250,000 commercial equity loan against the property to fund a massive salon expansion in downtown Tampa."

"And what would have happened if they defaulted on that loan?" Hannah asked.

"The bank would have foreclosed on your home," Captain Ramirez answered plainly. "You would have returned from deployment to find your aunt’s legacy seized by creditors, your credit destroyed, and your daughter traumatized."

"And the auxiliary debit card?"

"We traced the spending," Ramirez continued. "In the two months you were at Fort Drum, Ryan, Ashley, and Margaret spent a total of $14,985.78 on luxury apparel, high-end dining, cosmetic procedures, and spa vacations. Not a single dollar was spent on Lily’s kindergarten tuition. The school sent three overdue notices, which Ryan intercepted and threw in the trash."

Just then, Detective Jenkins walked into the conference room, carrying a fresh case file.

"Hannah, you’ll be glad to hear that the State Attorney’s Office has formally upgraded the charges," Jenkins announced. "Because of the forged military notary and the interstate travel to Miami to execute the fraudulent instruments, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and federal prosecutors have taken over the case. Ryan, Margaret, and Ashley are now facing federal wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and conspiracy charges on top of the state felony child abuse counts."

"What about bail?" Hannah asked.

"Denied," Detective Jenkins smiled grimly. "Given the flight risk and the severity of the danger posed to a minor, the judge remanded all three of them into custody without bond pending trial."
