Chapter 3 - The Secret iPad and the Miami Villa Receipts

While Lily slept under the gentle hum of the hospital monitors, I began digging into our financial records.

When I deployed to Fort Drum, I had left Ryan an authorized debit card connected to an auxiliary account loaded with $15,000. That money was earmarked strictly for Lily’s private kindergarten tuition, groceries, pediatric insurance co-pays, and home maintenance. My primary savings account, containing over $140,000 saved from my military hazard pay, medical bonuses, and Aunt Diane’s inheritance, was supposed to be completely locked down.

I logged into my banking portal.

What I saw made my breath catch in my throat.

The auxiliary account balance read: $14.22.

Over the course of six weeks, thousands of dollars had been spent at high-end steakhouses, luxury shopping outlets, designer boutiques, and lavish beachfront resorts in South Beach. There were charges for five-star spa treatments, VIP nightclub bottle service, and payments made to an LLC named "Ashley’s Velvet Touch"—the nail salon my sister-in-law operated out of the commercial addition on my property.

More alarming, however, were three failed electronic transfer requests from the primary savings account. Ryan had attempted to transfer $50,000 out of my locked inheritance on three separate occasions over the last week. The only reason the money hadn't cleared was because the military credit union required two-factor biometric authentication from my registered phone.

"He didn't just abandon her," I whispered to myself, my eyes burning with fury. "He was trying to rob me blind."

Just then, my sister, Chloe, arrived at the hospital room. Chloe had driven three hours straight from Orlando the second I texted her. She rushed in, tears streaming down her face, and threw her arms around me.

"Hannah! Oh my God, is she okay?" Chloe sobbed, looking over at Lily.

"She's recovering," I said, holding Chloe tight. "Her vitals are stabilizing. But Chloe, look at this."

I showed Chloe the bank statements. Chloe’s eyes widened in sheer horror.

"Hannah, you need to see what Ashley posted on Instagram two hours ago," Chloe said, quickly pulling out her smartphone.

She handed the phone to me.

On the screen was a video story posted by Ashley Miller. In the video, Ryan, his mother Margaret, and Ashley were sitting on the deck of a chartered private yacht in Biscayne Bay. Champagne flutes were raised in the air, glittering in the bright Florida sunshine.

Margaret, wearing oversized designer sunglasses and an expensive sunhat, clinked her glass against Ryan’s.

"To the new salon expansion and the Miller family empire!" Ashley squealed in the background. "Paid in full by the military dummy up north!"

Ryan laughed heartily, taking a massive gulp of champagne. "Here's to Hannah's endless deployments! Keep sending those government checks, baby!"

My hands shook with a cold, terrifying calm. They weren't just neglecting my daughter; they were reveling in their cruelty, treating my sacrifice for our country as nothing more than an open checkbook for their parasitic vanity.

"Chloe," I said, handing her phone back. "Did you bring Lily’s school backpack from the house like I asked?"

"Yes, it's right here," Chloe replied, handing me the small unicorn-patterned backpack.

I unzipped the front pocket. Inside was Lily’s pink educational iPad. I unlocked the screen, intending to check her school communication app to see how many days of class she had missed.

When I opened the tablet’s notification center, my eyes caught a saved voice memo titled 'Kitchen_Audio_05_04.m4a'.

It had been recorded two days ago—the very morning Ryan and his family drove off to Miami.
