Chapter 8 - The Confrontation on the Front Lawn

Standing near the edge of the property was an official from the City of Tampa Code Enforcement and a commercial process server holding a stack of red-stamped legal documents.
"Ashley Miller," the process server stated loudly, handing a document to the officer holding her. "You are hereby served with an immediate emergency eviction order for the commercial annex at 1422 Magnolia Court, along with a cease-and-desist order for operating an unlicensed commercial beauty establishment on private residential property without zoning permits or landlord authorization."
"What?!" Ashley screamed, tears of rage and mascara smearing down her cheeks. "Ryan told me I had full permission! He said this was our family's property!"
"It was never Ryan's property," Hannah replied, stepping closer until she was only inches from Ashley’s trembling face. "This home was bequeathed solely to me by my late aunt. Ryan’s name is nowhere on the title, nowhere on the deed, and neither is yours. You have been squatting here rent-free, stealing electricity and water, and funneling my deployment earnings into your fraudulent shell company."
"Hannah, honey, listen to your mother-in-law!" Margaret cried out, sinking to her knees on the driveway as the officers secured the cuffs around her wrists. "Think of the family! Think of Lily! How will it look to her when her father and grandmother are in prison?!"
Hannah looked down at Margaret with unyielding disgust.
"Lily is currently recovering in the pediatric trauma center where she was treated for acute starvation and dehydration," Hannah said, her voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "She asked me if she was left alone because she was 'bad.' She sat in that dark kitchen drinking tap water from a plastic bottle while you clinked champagne glasses on a yacht and toasted to the 'military dummy' paying your bills."
Margaret’s face froze in utter horror. "You... you heard...?"
"I have the audio recording of your entire conversation from Friday morning," Hannah revealed, pulling Lily’s iPad from Captain Ramirez’s hands and holding it up for everyone to see. "I have your voices planning the forged deed transfer, discussing how to lock Lily inside so she wouldn't bother you, and laughing about stealing my savings."
Ryan’s knees buckled. He would have collapsed onto the concrete if the two arresting officers hadn't held him upright.
"Hannah... please..." Ryan wept, snot and tears dripping down his face. "I made a terrible mistake! I was under so much stress! I love Lily! I love you! You can't destroy our marriage like this!"
May you like
"Our marriage ended the second you turned the deadbolt on our starving daughter," Hannah replied without a shred of mercy. "Take them away, officers."
The neighborhood gathered along the sidewalks, watching in stunned silence as Ryan, Margaret, and Ashley were hauled into the backs of the separate police cruisers. The sirens wailed as the convoy pulled away from Magnolia Court, leaving behind only the quiet breeze rustling through the palm trees.
