Chapter 10 - The Custody Ambush & Protective Order

On Wednesday morning, Hannah stood before Judge Evelyn Carter in Hillsborough County Family Court for an emergency custody and restraining order hearing.
Ryan appeared via video link from the county jail, wearing an orange inmate jumpsuit. His hair was disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, and his usual arrogant smirk replaced by the hollow stare of a broken man. His public defender sat beside the monitor looking thoroughly exhausted.
"Your Honor," Hannah’s family attorney argued, presenting the medical reports from Tampa General Hospital and the police arrest affidavits. "The respondent demonstrated wanton, malicious disregard for the life and safety of five-year-old Lily Miller. He deliberately abandoned her in a locked dwelling for over two days without sustenance, resulting in emergency hospitalization. We request immediate, sole legal and physical custody granted to Major Hannah Vance, with zero visitation rights for the respondent, and a permanent lifetime order of protection."
Ryan’s public defender cleared his throat weakly. "Your Honor, my client recognizes the severity of the circumstances, but he maintains that this was an isolated lapse in judgment caused by marital stress. He requests supervised visitation once his criminal proceedings conclude."
Judge Carter adjusted her glasses and stared directly into the camera at Ryan.
"Mr. Miller," Judge Carter said, her voice dripping with icy disdain. "I have reviewed the audio evidence and the pediatric trauma intake records. In my twenty-two years on the bench, I have rarely seen such callous, narcissistic indifference toward a child of tender years. You did not suffer a 'lapse in judgment'; you executed a calculated, cruel abandonment of your own flesh and blood for a weekend of hedonism and theft."
Judge Carter slammed her gavel down with thunderous force.
"Sole legal and physical custody of Lily Miller is awarded exclusively to Major Hannah Vance. Respondent Ryan Miller is prohibited from having any contact, direct or indirect, with the minor child or the petitioner for the rest of his natural life. Furthermore, respondent is ordered to surrender all keys, property access, and marital claims to the residence at 1422 Magnolia Court immediately."

On the video monitor, Ryan buried his face in his cuffed hands and began to sob uncontrollably.
Hannah did not shed a single tear. She simply stood tall, thanked the judge, and walked out of the courtroom with her head held high.
