Chapter 7 - The Sudden Financial Freeze

Ryan slammed on the brakes, his tires screeching against the asphalt.
"What... what is she doing here?!" Ashley gasped, dropping her smartphone onto the floor mats. "I thought you said her deployment didn't end until June!"
Margaret’s face drained of all color, her hands shaking so hard that her new diamond bracelet clattered against the dashboard. "Ryan... why are there police cars in the driveway? Did the neighbors see Lily?"
"Shut up! Both of you, shut up!" Ryan hissed, sweat instantly beading across his forehead. "Just follow my lead! Act natural! We just went out for a long lunch, that’s all! Nobody knows anything!"
Ryan threw the SUV into park and stepped out onto the driveway, forcing an easygoing, charming smile onto his face as if he were greeting old friends at a barbecue.
"Hannah! Honey!" Ryan called out, opening his arms wide and walking toward the lawn. "You're home early! What an incredible surprise! Why didn't you tell me? We would have thrown you a huge welcome-home party!"
Margaret and Ashley quickly scrambled out behind him, clutching their designer handbags and attempting awkward, plastic smiles.
"Hannah, darling!" Margaret chimed in, her voice shrill with nervous tension. "Look at you! We were just running errands for Lily! We were literally talking about making her favorite dinner tonight!"
Hannah didn't move an inch. She didn't blink. She stood completely motionless, her gaze cutting through them like an icy blade.
Detective Jenkins stepped forward from the porch, holding a set of steel handcuffs.
"Ryan Miller?" Detective Jenkins asked calmly.
"Yes, officer? Is there a problem?" Ryan chuckled, looking around nervously. "Did our house alarm go off? Sometimes the sensor near the back patio glitches—"
"Ryan Miller, you are under arrest for aggravated child abuse, felony child neglect with great bodily harm, and unlawful restraint of a minor," Detective Jenkins announced loudly, grabbing Ryan’s arm and twisting it behind his back.
Click.
The cold steel clamped tightly around Ryan’s right wrist.
"Wait! What are you doing?! Hannah, tell them to stop!" Ryan yelled, thrashing against the detective’s grip. "This is a misunderstanding! I only stepped out for an hour to get groceries!"
"You left on Friday morning at 7:45 AM, Ryan," Hannah said, her voice cutting through his frantic screams with absolute clarity. "Today is Sunday, 2:15 PM. You abandoned our five-year-old child in an unairconditioned house with no food and locked doors for over fifty-four hours while you chartered yachts in Miami."
"Hannah, please!" Margaret wailed, rushing forward with her hands outstretched. "He’s your husband! Family makes mistakes! Ashley and I told him it was a bad idea, but he insisted—"
"Margaret Miller and Ashley Miller," a second police officer announced, stepping up behind the two women with two additional pairs of handcuffs. "You are being detained as co-conspirators in felony child endangerment and grand theft investigations."

"Get your hands off me!" Ashley shrieked, flailing wildly as the officer pinned her arms behind her back. "I run a legitimate business on this property! You can’t arrest me! I have clients booked tomorrow!"
"Not anymore, you don't," Hannah said coldly, pointing toward the commercial annex.
