Chapter 14 - Sentencing and Ruin

When the jury filed back into the courtroom, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

"On the count of Aggravated Child Abuse with Great Bodily Harm," the jury foreperson read clearly, "we find the defendant, Ryan Miller, guilty."

"On the count of Unlawful Imprisonment of a Minor: guilty."

"On the count of Federal Wire Fraud and Identity Theft: guilty."

"On the counts of Grand Larceny and Conspiracy against Margaret Miller and Ashley Miller: guilty on all counts."

Ryan collapsed onto the defense table, sobbing hysterically. Ashley shrieked in terror and buried her face in her hands, while Margaret sat frozen in shock, her mouth hanging open.

Judge Evelyn Carter ordered the defendants to stand for sentencing.

"Ryan Miller," Judge Carter spoke, her voice ringing out like a judgment from above. "You were entrusted with the most sacred duty any human being can possess: the protection and nurturing of your innocent child. Instead, you betrayed that trust with a level of cruelty, greed, and cowardice that shocks the conscience of this entire community. You abandoned your daughter to die in an empty house so you could indulge in stolen luxury."

Judge Carter delivered the sentence without hesitation:

"On the charge of Aggravated Child Abuse, I sentence you to twenty-five years in the Florida Department of Corrections, without the possibility of early parole. On the federal wire fraud and grand larceny counts, you are sentenced to an additional ten years, to run consecutive to your state sentence."

"Ashley Miller, for your central role in the conspiracy, forgery, and grand theft, you are sentenced to twelve years in state prison."

"Margaret Miller, for conspiracy, evidence tampering, and violation of federal protective orders, you are sentenced to eight years in state prison."

"Furthermore," Judge Carter concluded, "the court orders full restitution in the amount of $185,000, to be paid through the immediate seizure and liquidation of all personal assets belonging to the defendants, including vehicles, personal accounts, and personal property."

As the bailiffs stepped forward and placed heavy iron chains around Ryan’s waist and ankles, he turned his tear-stained face toward Hannah in the gallery.

"Hannah! Please! I’m going to die in prison! Forgive me! Tell them you forgive me!" Ryan wailed as he was dragged toward the holding cells.

Hannah looked at him with cool, unshakable composure.

"I already forgave myself for ever trusting you, Ryan," she said quietly. "Now you can spend the next thirty-five years paying your debt to society."
