Chapter 9 - The Truth About Clara’s Last Breath

The VIP surgical wing of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital was completely locked down by private Vance security.

Molly sat on a stiff vinyl chair in the waiting room, still wearing her blood-splattered velvet gown. She refused to leave. She refused to change. She refused Mrs. Higgins' gentle pleas to go back to the estate and rest with Lily.

"I’m staying," Molly had said with an iron resolve nobody could shake.

For four agonizing hours, the red surgical light remained illuminated.

Finally, at four o'clock in the morning, the heavy double doors opened. Dr. Reynolds emerged, pulling his surgical mask down. He looked exhausted, but his eyes were calm.

"Dr. Reynolds?" Molly jumped up, her heart in her throat.

"The bullet passed through the shoulder muscle cleanly, Miss Grant," Dr. Reynolds said with a reassuring smile. "It missed the subclavian artery by less than an inch. We repaired the muscle tissue and stopped the internal bleeding. Master Jonathan is strong as an ox. He is in recovery and already waking up."

Molly collapsed back into the chair, covering her face and letting out a long, ragged sob of pure relief.

"Can I see him?" she asked, looking up through her tears.

"He specifically demanded to see you before the anesthesia even fully wore off," the doctor chuckled. "Room 401."

Molly practically ran down the corridor.

She pushed open the door to Room 401.

Jonathan lay in the center of the bed, his broad chest bare except for heavy white bandages taped across his left shoulder. An IV line was attached to his arm, and monitors beeped steadily in the background.

Despite the pale tone of his skin, his slate-gray eyes were sharp and focused the moment she stepped through the door.

"You didn't change," Jonathan said, his voice raspy from the intubation tube.

"I wasn't leaving you," Molly said, walking straight to the bedside.

She reached out and took his large, calloused right hand in both of hers. It was warm and strong.

"Julian has been formally indicted on seventeen federal counts, including attempted murder, corporate espionage, and conspiracy," Molly told him softly. "Devin has been transferred to a state correctional facility. It’s over, Jonathan. You won."

Jonathan looked at their joined hands.

"I didn't care about the corporate victory tonight, Molly," he confessed quietly. "When Julian raised that weapon, all I could think about was that I couldn't let another innocent woman die because of my family's greed."

He looked up into her hazel eyes, his expression vulnerable in a way no Wall Street titan had ever seen.

"Clara’s diary was recovered from Julian’s safe tonight," Jonathan said. "In the final entry, she wrote about you."

Molly blinked. "About me?"

"She wrote: 'There is an angel named Molly who works the third shift. She sits with me when the morphine wears off and tells me stories about her dream of opening a small bakery. She doesn't know who I am. She doesn't know my family has billions. She holds my hand simply because she has a heart too large for this cruel world. If Jonathan ever finds this, I want him to know that this is what true love looks like.'"

Molly choked back a fresh wave of tears, her chest aching with the beauty and sorrow of Clara’s memory.

"I just wanted her not to feel alone," Molly whispered.

"And you succeeded," Jonathan said, squeezing her hand with surprising strength. "And now, Molly... I do not want you to ever feel alone again."
