Chapter 3 - Little Lily's Laughter and the Billionaire's Unmelted Heart

Dr. Reynolds was brisk, gentle, and utterly professional. Within forty minutes, Molly’s split lip had been disinfected and treated with medical balm, her swollen cheek was packed in soothing cold compresses, and four delicate stitches had been placed in her torn knee.
She was now dressed in an oversized, incredibly soft cashmere robe provided by Mrs. Higgins, sitting on a plush velvet sofa in a bedroom larger than her entire apartment. A crackling fire burned in the stone hearth, casting a warm, golden glow across the silk-lined walls.
A sudden commotion in the hallway made Molly jump to her feet, ignoring the throb in her knee.
The heavy oak doors swung open.
"MOMMY!"
A small, whirlwind figure with messy brown curls and bright hazel eyes burst into the room, wearing her favorite bunny-patterned pajamas and holding a worn stuffed bear.
"Lily!" Molly dropped to her knees on the thick Persian rug, wrapping her arms tightly around her daughter. She buried her face in Lily’s hair, smelling the familiar scent of strawberry shampoo, and finally let her tears fall freely. "Oh, baby. You’re okay. You’re safe."
"Mommy, some really big men in fancy suits came to Mrs. Calloway's house!" Lily said, her eyes wide with excitement rather than fear. "They had badges and they let me ride in a giant car with TV screens inside! They gave Mrs. Calloway tea and took her to her sister's house in a limousine!"
Behind Lily stood Jonathan Vance, framed by the doorway.
The towering billionaire, who commanded thousands of employees with a single glance, looked completely out of his element as Lily suddenly spun around and pointed her stuffed bear at him.
"Are you the prince of this castle?" Lily demanded with seven-year-old boldness.
Jonathan blinked, glancing at Molly, who wiped her tears and tried to stifle a nervous laugh.
"I am not a prince," Jonathan said stiffly, stepping into the room. "I am Jonathan."
"You look like a prince," Lily declared, walking right up to him and tilting her head back to look at his towering frame. "Mommy works at the diner so we can buy a castle one day. But yours is already finished."
Jonathan looked down at the tiny girl. For a man who had spent a decade surrounded by sycophants, corporate sharks, and cold ambition, the pure, unvarnished innocence of the child seemed to strike him with the force of a physical blow.
Slowly, deliberately, the billionaire lowered himself onto one knee, bringing his eyes level with Lily’s.
"Your mother is a very brave woman, Lily," Jonathan said, his deep voice softer than Molly had ever heard it. "And this house is safe for both of you. Nobody will ever hurt either of you here."
Lily smiled brightly, then reached out a tiny hand and gently touched the scar beneath Jonathan’s ear.
Molly gasped, about to pull her daughter back, terrified Jonathan would take offense.
Instead, Jonathan didn't flinch. He stayed perfectly still as the child examined his battle mark.
"Did you get an ouchie too?" Lily asked softly.
"A long time ago," Jonathan replied. "It doesn't hurt anymore."
"Mommy kisses my ouchies to make them feel better," Lily said matter-of-factly. "Do you want me to kiss it?"
A faint flush touched Jonathan’s high cheekbones. The intimidating titan of industry looked entirely disarmed.
"Perhaps later," Jonathan murmured, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips. "Right now, Mrs. Higgins has prepared warm hot chocolate and fresh pastries in the kitchen downstairs. Would you like some?"
Lily’s eyes lit up like stars. "With marshmallows?"
"As many as you can fit in the mug."
"MOMMY, CAN I GO?"
Molly smiled through her tears, nodding. "Go on, sweetie. Stay with Mrs. Higgins."
Lily cheered, grabbed Jonathan’s sleeve for balance, and skipped out the door where Mrs. Higgins was waiting with a beaming smile.
As the door clicked shut, the heavy silence returned to the room, but the atmosphere had changed completely.
Jonathan rose to his feet, dusting off his trousers. He turned to Molly, his expression serious.
"She looks like you," he said.
"Thank God she got my eyes and not Devin's," Molly whispered, her voice dropping. "Devin isn't her biological father, thank heavens, but he acted like he owned both of us."
Jonathan took a step closer, his eyes lingering on the silver locket resting against her robe.
"My security team retrieved everything from your apartment," Jonathan said. "Your clothes, your documents, your daughter's belongings. Devin arrived at your building ten minutes after my men extracted Lily. He tried to force the front door."
Molly’s breath hitched. "Where is he?"
"In a private holding facility on the south end of my estate," Jonathan said without a flicker of remorse. "He will not be touching you again, Molly. But there is something you need to know."
May you like
Jonathan reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, intricately carved silver key.
"That pendant around your neck is not just a keepsake," Jonathan revealed, his voice darkening with gravity. "It is a vault key. And Devin wasn't following you just because he is an abusive brute. He was hired."
