Chapter 5 - Devin’s Threatening Shadow and the Broken Windows

Deep beneath the east wing of the estate, in a soundproofed concrete chamber lit by harsh white LED lights, Devin sat strapped to a steel chair.

His face was bruised, his clothes torn from his struggle with Jonathan’s security operators. His eyes darted frantically around the room as the heavy steel door hissed open.

Jonathan Vance stepped into the room, flanked by Marcus.

Devin sneered, trying to mask his terror with bravado. "You think you can kidnap me, you rich prick? I know my rights! Molly is my woman! She belongs to me! When I get out of here, I’m gonna take her apart, and then I’m gonna—"

Marcus stepped forward like a shadow and delivered a single, brutal open-handed strike to Devin’s jaw. Devin’s head snapped back, spitting blood onto the concrete floor.

"You speak only when asked a question," Marcus said calmly.

Jonathan pulled up a metal chair, turned it around, and sat down smoothly, resting his forearms on the backrest. He looked at Devin the way an entomologist looks at a particularly irritating cockroach.

"Julian Vance offered you fifty thousand dollars," Jonathan began, his voice dead and emotionless. "Tell me the meeting location."

Devin wiped blood from his chin on his shoulder, glaring at Jonathan with pure hatred. "Screw you. Molly is a fat pig who couldn't even keep a real man happy. She hid that necklace from me for years! That money is mine!"

Jonathan didn't raise his voice. He didn't show anger. He simply leaned forward slightly.

"Marcus," Jonathan said.

"Sir?"

"Mr. Miller seems to believe his fingers are necessary for his future. Disabuse him of that notion, starting with the left pinky."

"Wait! WAIT!" Devin screamed, thrashing against the heavy leather restraints as Marcus produced a pair of heavy tactical pliers from his belt. "STOP! I’LL TALK! I’LL TALK!"

Jonathan raised a finger. Marcus halted instantly.

"The location," Jonathan repeated.

"The pier!" Devin blubbered, his bravado crumbling into pathetic sobs. "Pier 42! Tomorrow night at midnight! A guy named Carl... he’s Julian's fixer. I was supposed to bring the necklace to the warehouse at the end of the dock, get the cash in an envelope, and walk away!"

"Did you tell Carl where Molly’s daughter was?"

"No! I swear to God, no! Carl only cared about the locket! He said if Molly got in the way, to break her neck and throw her in the river, but I didn't tell him about the kid!"

Jonathan stood up, straightening his cuffs with cool precision.

"You hit her," Jonathan said, stepping close enough for Devin to smell the expensive sandalwood and crisp cedar of his cologne. "You struck a woman who gave you shelter, who fed you, who bore your insults for six years."

"She’s nothing!" Devin cried out desperately. "Nobody else would ever want a fat cow like her! I did her a favor!"

Jonathan’s eyes turned to shards of black ice.

"She is worth a thousand of you," Jonathan said softly. "Marcus, prepare him for the federal authorities. Hand over all his gambling records, his domestic assault documentation, and the wiretaps from Julian’s men. Make sure he is sentenced to the maximum facility in upstate. He will never see the sky without iron bars again."

"Understood, sir," Marcus replied.

Jonathan turned and walked out of the holding cell.

As he ascended the spiral staircase back to the main house, his phone buzzed. It was an alert from the estate’s perimeter security system.

On the live video feed, three black SUVs had just slowed down outside the outer perimeter gate on the mountain road, lingering for several seconds before speeding off into the darkness.

Julian Vance knew where the girl was.

The war had officially begun.
